THROUGH INDIA.

LECTURE BY MR. W. H. GEORGE. The first lecture of a series arranged by; the Tourist Club, established in connection With the educational department of the Y.M.C.A., was delivered host evening by Mr. W. H. George, a member of the- management 1 board of the association. Mr. J.. Caughley, M.A., who has charge of the educational department, presided, and introduced the "guide" appointed to take charge of the, first travel lecture.

Speaking on "India,, the Land of Colours and Caste," Mr. George recalled incidents of his- trip through that country eighteen month's 3go. Tho long railway, .journey from south to north, a stay in Calcutta, a flying visit to Eastern Bengal, and the crossing of the .north-west. plains to Bombay, afforded material for a most enlightening talk.

■ By means of lantern slides,'the temples of ' India were brought near, the rice famines appeared in convincing vividness, and the work of the missions, notably the Y.M.C.A., 'was illustrated in an. interesting fashion.- The lecturer conveyed a quantity of useful information regarding the customs and condition of the people, the effect of caste differences, the attitude of students to mission, work, and the trouble among the natives.

At the conclusion a vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Georgej and to Mr. W. Driffield, who had charge of the projecting lantern.
