'■' '* WEDNESDAY. Haricot bean soup. Roast loin of mutton.. Baked potatoes. Stewed onions. Baked marmalade pudding. HARICOT BEAN SOUP. Three quarts of stock, 1 pint of haricot beans, pepper and salt to taste. . Soak the beans all niglit in cold water, drain them, and boil in cold water, slightly salted, until quite tender,'about li hours; Prem them through a sieve .with a .spoon, and add them t6 the Stock,' which should be warm; add pepper and salt to taste, boil up once more, and servo: with a dish of fried bread cut into dice.
FOR TO-MORROW. Two rabbits. A few thin slices of ialt: pork. Currant jelly. Bananas. One egg.. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL, Tea at Awarua. . v Yesterday afternoon Lady Ward gave a most enjoyable tea at Awarua for the wives and delegates 'to the Municipal Conference' now sitting in Wellington,' and. for wives of members in town for the session. The drawingroom, where tea was served, looked .most cheerful .With its profusion of spring flowers and feathery wattle, liady Ward received in a frock of. black ninon, and Miss. Dance in Sydney Street Schoolroom. '■■' The Sydney Street' • Schoolroom was almost crowded last night when a dance was'given by a committee of twenty-seven ladies, and between two and three Hundred, guests were present. The stage had been removed from; one end of the hall, I 'and this was carpeted, and furnished and decorated ;"■', with/palms.-' It is a device that affords more .room for . dancers, but at the same time, removes a vantage ground from which a clear' view of. the room can be obtained.. The decorations, at the back of:the hall, and over the . .doors awl ■ windows, were draperies of white and scarlet, very cheerful and effective, and everywhere one caught . glimpses of the red and black programmes,'which'were adorned with a wierd. black figure. . v The supper-tablesWere'decorated with ••spring, flowers, the centre table with .bands of: gold silk, yellow .flowers, in tall vases, and yellow streamers," and ■ silver, candelabra, with yellow shades. . The hostesses, most of- whom (wore black, wore their hair piled high and " .powdered, .and the tiniest ' black patches variously disposed, a very becoming fashion, which might,'-with advantage be revived. Mrs. Head, who '.- acted as secretary, wore a frock of .rose, satin, with , overdress■; o? wide-' meshed black net, and a scarf embroidered in rose colour; Mrs. Martin, ..pale pink ..satin;- Mrs.Biss, black'frock, with sequins ;' Mrs. Brandon, - black satin; Mrs.; C. Miss Russell, in white crepe-de chine, with crystal trimming. Miss Beatrice Day came after the play, n-eanng. a frock of .white satin .
/The Two-Carm.ent Sooiety. Yesterday afternoon- Mrs. CJias 'Izard, secretary to the Wellington-Tyo-Garraent Society, entertained the nce-presidents of- the society at tea at nor home on Talavera Terrace. During the afternoon Mrs. Izard read a . report of the year's work, and a series of letters received from the various institutions and charities to which the Bociety had sent donations, thanking it very heartily for its welcome help.
Women's Social and Political League. There was an unusually largo attendance at tho meeting of the Women's Social and Political League hold- last night. It was the cud of the financial year, and the secretary presented a statement and report which were most encouraging, and showed a healthy balance and a greatly increased membership: The following were elected for the ensuing year:—Vice-presidents, Mcsdames K. Brown and Tusker; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Moore; council, Mesdamos Bowden, Morris, O'Sul.livaj.,- M'L'atlorty, and Mason, and Miss M'Lean.- It was decided that the meeting should bo thrown open for harmony, the friends of the members being invited. Five new members'were elected. A hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Moore for her untiring energy and single hearted devotion to tho league wa-s carried. .

Mrs. E. J. Brown, of Clyde Street, Island Bay, has gone to visit her sister- in Auckland.
A-letter received by a friend in 'Wellington from Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., Who is now iu England, says that Mrs. M'Arthur is making extremely satisfactory progress since'her serious operation a fortnight before. It was onlyMrs. M|Arthur's 'Wonderful fortitude and cheerfulness that enabled her to •recover.
