EFFECT OF THE DEFENCE ACT. A BOOM IN-RECRUITING. (By relocrapS.—Bpecial Correspondent! Wanganul, July 5. On a; cliarge that he did publicly uso the letters M.R.C.A r .S.—this being calculated to cause persons to believe (contrary to fact) that he was a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Gordon' Lennox was fined £10 and costs by Mr. Kerr, S.M., yesterday. . '. ' Mr. J. J. Boyd, proprietor of the Aramono "Zoo," was charged-before the magistrate yesterday with, omitting to supply proper food to nine horses which are being kept to feed the lions. The case was partially heard and adjourned.
Reports from Country districts state that though tho heavy rains of the past few weeks have'made the roads very muddy there is only a minimum of damage through slips and wash-outs, and the roads are wearing very well. At a meeting of tho Powelka Petition Committee last night, Mr. W. Grey was appointed delegate to act with the representatives from the AYellington and Hawera committees: in a deputation to the Prime Minister regarding Powelka's sentence. ' Threo thousand names appear on the local petition. The effect of the now Defence Act has been to cause a boom in enlistment in local corps, all of which are now recruited up to full strength, and aro refusing applications. Most of the new recruits are of an excellent class, suchas (before universal training becamo compulsory) rather looked down on volunteering.
