His Excellency the Governor was the guest of the Hon. Dr. Eindlay at a dinner at tho Wellington Club last evening, where ho met the Judges of tho Court of Appeal, and several members of the Bar. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) was also present.

Mr. li. C. Towsley, chairman of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday.

Mr. T. M. Brodriok, Commissioner of Crown Lands at Napier, has been promoted to bo Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor at Christchurch, vice Mr. Flanagan, who. has been appointed A : aluer-Genoral. Tho vacancy at Napier will ho filled by tho appointment of Mr. Charles Pollen, chief draughtsman at Auckland.

Mr. T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Hawko's Bay, has boon' appointed Commissioner for Canterbury, as from August 1, and will bo succeeded at Napier by Mr. ,C. R. Pollon, chief draughtsman at Auckland. — Press Association.

Mrs. Baume, widow of the late Mr. X- E. Baumo, K.C., of Auckland, is a passenger by tho Tainui, which is due here from London on Saturday.

Mr. William Gill, who for nineteen years-has been manager of the Alliance Assurance Company in Wellington, has resigned that position, and is about to retire on pension. Mr. Gill has had a long and honourable connection with insurance business. Starting life in tho iron trade, ho rose to responsible positions in the north of England, being at one- time secretary of the company which built the . original TajBridge. Ho visited New Zealand in 1879, having come out to Australia on a business visit, and three years later settled in the Dominion. After holding several insurance positions, he became manager of the Union Assurance Company's Wellington office, in*' 1892, a position which ho retained when that company was absorbed by tho Alliance office. Mr. Gill, who is to be succeeded as manager by Mr. C. R. Smith,, now manager at Duuedin, is about to take up his residence at Upper Hutt.

Mr. Clifford Paul, of the Masterton branch of tho Bank of Australasia, who has heeu transferred elsewhere, was this week presented by the members of tho Masterton Theatrical Society with a handsome travelling bag. Mr. AY, J. Jago, in making the presentation, referred' to tho able manner in which Mr. Paul had carried out his duties as secretary of the society.

Mr. John Arnfitt, J.P., a wellknown Wellington citizen, died at his residence' in Roxburgh Street yesterday morning. Deceased, who was 73 years of age, was a-native of Glasgow, and arrived "in "Dunedin in 1863, where he was employed with the "Otago Daily Times," then under the management of Mr. Julius Vogel (afterwards Sir Julius) ."''Mr.'B. L. Farjeon. Subsequently, the West Coast gold discovery attracted him. and, in conjunction with the late Hon. James Kerr, M.L.C., and Mr. J.Keogh, he started the first nowtpiipet ta Greymoutb. known as the "Grey River Argus." He also held the position .of secretary of the Grey Hosnital and Charitable Aid Board for a period of 31 years. Mr. Arnott founded n: paper in Hastings, and shortly afterwards joined, the staff of the Government Printing Office here, and only a few months ago retired under the superannuation regulations. Deceased leaves a widow and 'family of five daughters and.one son.
