DR. F. J. FURNIVALL. By Teleeraph—Press Association—Copyright. London, July 3. The death is announced of J)r. Frederick James Furnivall, Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, tho well-known authority on early English literature, and tho founder of many literary societies. Dr. Furnivall was born in 1825. He was for many years sole editor of the Now English (now tho Oxford) Dictionary, and has edited and written introductions for many Shakespearean and other classical reprints.

MAJOR MARTIN HUME. London, July 3. Major Hume, editor of I lie Spanish State Papers, at the Public Record Office, is dead, aged li!). After service in the Army, Major Hume took up literary work, and lias done much historical writing, mainly in connection with Spanish subjects, having been educated in Mudrid. He has been awarded many Spanish decorations.

UNIONIST M.P. London, July 3. The death is announced of Mr.-Charles M'Arthur, Unionist member for tho Kirkdale division of Liverpool. Mr. M'Arthur has held this seat since 1897, and formerly represented another division of his city from 1807 to 1905. Ho was on authority on marino insuraiico, and was chairman of tho Association of Average Adjusters of the United Kingdom.

SYDNEY NEWSPAPER MANAGER. Sydney, July 4. Mr. Samuel Cook, formerly manager of tho "Sydney Morning Herald," is dead. The deceased gentleman wn.s born eighty voai*s a»o in Leicester, England, and served his apprenticeship to the printing trade in that town, ne came to Australia in 185-4 under engagement to tho Sydney "Herald" Proprietary, and remained with tho firm until- his retirement in 1907. Ho was general manager of tho paper from ISSB onwards. He took a leading part in having public reserves and parks set aside in New South Wales.

AN ENGLISH CIiICKETER. London, July 3. Mr. Mordccai Shcrwin, the well-known Notts wicket-keeper, died to-day, aged 59.
