BOY SCOUTS.
A BIG DEMONSTRATION. INTERESTING COMPETITIONS. Every inch of space in the Concert Room of tho Town Hall was crowded on Saturday evening on tho occasion of tho demonstration which was given by tho Boy Scouts of tho city in aid of the Te Aro Battalion of Scouts. Mr. C. J. Crawford (who presided) remarked that tho essence of the hoy scout movement was that the hoy should develop his manhood in natural surroundings and according to the best instincts of his nature; that he should make the best and most profitable use of his inclinations and his natural powers, sharpen his perceptions, and develop his constitution. There was no better way to accomplish these things than by living a free and wholesome life in the open air, observing the things around him, and learning to be practical in making shift for himself. The scout movement was in no sense a military movement, but it was made of additional valuo by being organised, for purposes of discipline, in a military way. (Applause.) 'J'ho programme for tho evening included several interesting competitions in bugle calls, signalling, first aid work, knotting, and hut-building. These were most keenly contested, and somo expert displays were witnessed. The hut-build-ing and knotting competitions particularly were interesting demonstrations of the practical side of boy scout work. Tho following wcx the results:— District Championship Signalling Competition, for medal presented by Mr. Stuart Robinson—Scout J. Welsh, Kelburno Troop, 1; Scout Cox, I'etone Troop, District Championship First Aid Competition, for banner presented by Mr. W. 11. S. Moorliouso.—Boys' Institute (Wolf Patrol).
