HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Onr Special Correspondent.' On Saturday night, at the Petane Main School, a large assembly of parents, scholars, and their friends gathered for the purpose of witnessing tho presentation ceremony of the Kebbell Shield. Major M'Douald, accompanied by his staff officer, Lieutenant Stevens, and the officers of the Third Cadet Battalion, wore present. Tho shield, which was donated by Captain Kebbell, was given for a firing competition for teams ot five in the Third Battalion, and tho two teams that entered from tho Petono Company tied for first place. In making the presentation, Major M'Donald outlined tho position of cadets of to-day, stating that, out of the 25,000 cadets in the Dominion, only one company had. objected to compulsory training. He urged parents to assist the boys in such a splendid work. Tho speaker further explained what was required of the boys to become first-class marksmen. Mr. 1). M'Kenzio (chairman of Petono District High School) congratulated both teams on winning the shield. The winning teams, who were also presented with a medal each, are as under:— Colour-Sergeant Duncan, Sergeant Wynyard, Sergeant Colquhoun, Sergeant Buston, Corporal Lusty, Corporal AbrahaU, and Privates Marsdon and Wilson. .Opportunity was also taken to present tho marksmen's badges, won at the- "Boys' Bisley," held at Trcntham last November, lo Colour-Sergeant Duncan. Sergeant Colquhoun, Corporal AErahall, and Private Mwsden. .. At tho Wesley Church yesterday evening, the Bev. 11. J. Reamer delivered an interesting address lo youiiK men, his subject being "Suiting Christianity to the. Age." In connection with this church it may bo mentioned that lias increased by 25 per cent, within tho past 12 months.
