SUCCESS OF CONCILIATION.

STATEMENT BY MR. J. R. TRIGGS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, July 2. "Have you seen any signs that tho arbitration and conciliation system is outgrowing its usefulness:-" a reporter asked Mr. J. E. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner, this morning. "i believo tho amended scheme is working admirably," Mr. Triggs replied. "I need only reler to my recent visit to tho south as an illustration. in one caso there this week one of the employers in the dispute said ho was certainly not prepared to give an increase in wages asked by tho workers. We had a friendly meeting around the table, and I pointed out that he was paying lower wages than wero paid to an ordinary labourer in tho street, while his workers wero engaged in much more unpleasant labour. Ho saw at once that there was a great deal in the argument, and immediately agreed to give an increase. Every employer connected with the industry signed tho agreement of his own accord, and a dispute which might have caused much unpleasantness was settled without any feeling and to the satisfaction of both sides. This is only one case out of many, but it may lie taken as a typical instance of the operation of the conciliation provisions inserted in the Act a few years ago-"
