His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) has appointed Captain Hamilton as his first aide-de-camp. He will travel to New Zealand in the same steamer as Lady Islington. Captain Hamilton is a son of Lord Claude Hamilton, and nephew of the Duke of Abercorn. He was adjutant in Iho Grenadier Guards, and, like Captain Shannon and Captain Maitland-Hie. Governor's other aides—is a keen soldier. The Hon. J. Anstoy and the Hon. G.' J. Smith were passengers from the south by the Maori, which arrived yesterday morning. Tho Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., arrived in Wellington yesterday afternoon by the Hauroto from Lyttelton. Mr. Justice Edwards arrived in town from Napier on Saturday. Pastor Ries, ex-Mayor of Dannevirko, and Mrs. Hies were presented by tho councillors on Friday night with a massive tea and coll'ee service and an oak tra;- and biscuit barrel, handsomely mounted, in recognition of Pastor Ries's municipal services. Tho "Guardian" announces that the following clergy have joined the stall' of missioners in connection with the General Mission in l\av; Zealand:—-The Rev. Hubert W. Jones, rector of Guarlford; the Rov. E. D. Evatw, of St. Augustine's, Cambridge; the Rev. J. H. Darby. H<vrtlebury College of Missioners; the Rev. M. W. Kiuloch, rector of Eccleston; and the Rev. H. C. Bell, C.E.1.5., Mission for tho Diocese of Oxford. • Thu mission is to begin on September 1 in the diocese of Auckland. The American Consul-General at Auckland, having received the resignation of Mr. J. G. Duncan (Messrs. Levin and Co.) as Consular Agent foV the Wellington district, has appointed Mr. C. Harcourt Turner (Blackball Coal Co., Ltd.) to fill tho vacancy. Mr. Turner has previously held a similar appointment as Consular Agent for Queensland, and is consequently acquainted with the duties of the position. The Consular Agency has now been removed to No. 39 Johnston Street. Mr. Charles Timnicliffe, a butcher in tho employ of Messrs. Rod Bros., of Courtonay Place, for. ths . last ten or twelve years, died suddenly of lieart failure at his home in Johnsonvillo at about 2 p.m. on Saturday. Mr. TunnicliiVo had been into town during tho morning, and could not have been home very long before ho had tho seizure. He was about •12 years of age, and leaves a widow and four children. Mt. '.I. V. M'Donald, who is leaving tho legal firm of Messrs. G. and T. Young, to take a responsible position in Napier, has been presented by his o ! d companions with a gold pencil, suitably inscribed. The friends and fellow-workers of Mr. A. White, who was for some time engineer at Mount View Mental Hospital, and is now under transfer to Auckland, recently presented him with an illuminated address. Following on the removal of patients from Mount View Mental Hospital to Porirua and elsewhere, Mr. Arthur _ T. Wells, who was in c'liarge of the clerical work at Mount View for the past nineteen years, has been transferred to the departmental office in the Government Buildings. During his lengthy period of service at Mount View Mr. Wells made many friends, and a number of theso, desirous of giving some token of their esteem, visited Jlt. and Mrs. Wells at their residence in Island Bay last week. Mr. TV. M. White, acting as spokesman,testified to Mr. Wells's uniform courtesy, and presented him with a gold albert and locket, suitably inscribed. Mrs. Wells was tho recipient of a handsome pearl brooch. Guests at the Occidental Hotel include Captain Bendall, Mr. Hardy, M.P., Messrs. Riddel and Blizzard (Picton). Mr. College (Auckland), Mr. Rodgcrs (Palmersbon North), and Mr. Hemingway (Eltham). The following visitors to Wellington in connection with the Municipal Conference are staying at the Occidental Hotel:—Mr. Davis, Mayor of Ashburton; Mr. Pooks, Ashburton town clerk; Mr. Ball, Mayor of Invercargill, and Mrs. Ball; Mr" Nash, Mavcr of Palmerston North; Mr. Porcival. Mayor of Inglewood; and Captain and Mrs. Hayden. Potara To Tuhi, a celebrated old Waikato chief, died on Saturday at Mangero. Deceased will be buried at Taupiri next week, when the usual tangi will bo hold. —Press Association. Mr. James Suisted, a member of tho Wostporl. Harbour Board, and for many years ils chairman, also ex-Mayor of Westporl, and a member of different local bodies, (lied on Saturday afternoon. —Press Association. Tlio high esteem in which (he late Mr. Joseph Payton was held as journalist, and townsman was demonstrated (says our Ma=terton correspondent) at-tho funeral, w.hioh took place yesterday afternoon. The cortege was a very lengthy one. and was representative of the local public bodies and all shades of opinion. Members of the staff of tire "Wairarapa Daily Times" acted as pall-bearers, and, among those following were Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., Mr. W. F. Roydlionse (•'Wairarapa News"). Mr. James Brown ("Wairarapa Ago"), Mr. Pierce C. Freeth ("New Zealand 'limes"), Mr. Arthur H. Vile (Tin; Dominion-), Air. B. Hanley (formerly editor ".Marlborough Express"), and members of the literary and mechanical staffs of both Local papers.
