ANNIVERSARY DEMONSTRATION. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, July 1, The Temperance party. celebrated tho anniversary of the carrying ■ of NoLicenso in Masterton by the holdin<* of a demonstrations in tho :Town Hall on Thursday night. The attendance was not as large as was.expected, which is attributed to various reasons. The ehair was occupied by the Mayor (Mr. d. N. Coradiiie), and on the platform the.re were about a dozen promjueut representatives of the No-License party, including: the' Revs.' F. W. Isi'tt,- and A. Dewdney (Wellington), ltev. R. \V, Jackson (Canterbury),, .Mr. M'Dermctt (secretary of the Auckland Alliance), and ""the Rev. Hodge. "A" number of apologies were also read from, other prominent No-License advocates.: -

Addresses .were' given, by the Revs. Jackson, Isitt, and Dewdney, and by Messrs. .M'Dermott' and James M'Gregor. ; ■ '

. Mr. J. Bridges, organiser for the NoLicoiiso party in the Masterton district, read the following statement, which, he said, was the result of his interviews with 12(5 retailers of Mas-' terton, 112 of whom had replied, while 14 had refused to reply:—

NoLicense had on your business? ■ Answer: Eighty-two favourable, ■16 indefinite, of these 13 repre- ! sented either new businesses o.r..un- : der new management: 14 unfavourable. Do you think business generally has suffered as a result of' No-License?—Soventy-six replies favourable, 17 unfavourable, 15, indefinite, 4 gave no roply. What effect has No-License had on the public order and general . moral tone?— One hundred and five replies • .1. are favoura-ble, 6 . inde- ■ finite, 1 unfavourable. Would you recommend No-License as the.'solution "of. tho'liquor problem ?—Sovoiity-two were favourable, 34 unfavourable, of which 17recommended total prohibition, -3' indefinite, 3 gave no reply. In reading his annual report,' Mr. Bridges. referred to the prediction that the population would dwindle away as .the result of No-License. The Church and school returns showed that there had been an increase financially and' otherwise.
