A MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA.
SCH RUE PROPOSED. A proposal, which, if carried out, will emulate the practice of many European cities, was referred to in the following letter from the City Organist (Mr. J. Mmijjhan Burnett) to the Town Clerk, which was read at the meeting of tho tuy Council last evening:— "The scheme for the establishment of a municipal orchestra, which I informed you I was ot present prepuring for submission to the City Council, is not vet complete, but I will bo able to let you have full details before the .next meeting of the Finance Committee. As the scheme involves the formation of a guarantee fund I have had to approach a certain number of citizens, and I therefore think it proper that the council should oo informed at tho earliest opportunity of my intention to submit proposals for its consideration. and.-I am glad of your suggestion that mention should bo made at this evening's meeting." The letter was read at a very late hour, and no motion was passed by the council. The idea is understood to be that the orchestra 'would give Tegular performances in the Town Hall, 'supplementing the present organ recitals*.
