THE MERCER STREET TURBINE.

EVIDENTLY A SUCCESS. A.report of tho City Elcctrical Engineer (Mr. Stuart Richardson) in regard to the saving effected by the Parsons' turbine, installed at tho lighting station in Mercer Street, was presented to tho City Council last night. The engineer remarked that the turbine had now been running continuously from the beginning of the year, and had worked perfectly. The coal consumption since its installation had decreased by 25 per cent. This amounted to lliOO tons ill the half-year. The consumption of water had also materially decreased, and the engineer could safely estimate that tho machine would eli'cct'a saving in tho generation expenses of nearly X3OOO per annum.

Even better results might bo obtained by proceeding at once with the removal of the two large boilers from their present position in the old building to thi'i position reserved for them in the new building, ami at the same time fitting these boilers with economisers. A rough estimate of the cost of this work was alxrat ,-C-1000. _ The increased efficiency tii'ected by this rearrangement aud addition would effect a further saving of nearly .CliOO per annum.

The pmfcnt saving of ,£3OOO could not be assured unless the alteration outlined was' earned out at ail early- date, because there was no reserve boiler power close to the new turbine unit, and, in the cve. t of a breakdown to tho new boiler, all Hie sfeam "cnerated would have to bo generated in the old boiler-house, with a drop in efficiency, which would reduce the present estimated saving of „C,'IOUO by nearly one-half.

The Tramways Committee recommended the council to carry out the engineer's suggestions. In reply to questions, Mr. Richardson said that the turbine had cost about JCl'l,ooo. It had not displaced any machinery, but was working in conjunction with the old machinery of the power station. The work was increasing, and additional power would spoil bo re'juircd. The engineer's recommendations were approved.
