THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. {By Gi.encob.l Prophet has been scratched for the Winter Hurdles on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's meeting. Whito Cockade is tho only Kiccnrtontraineti horse entered for the Grand National Hurdle Kace. W. lietler, who was injured through Eille Unnge falling in the l.unghearli Hurdle* at Ashburtou, is making satisfactory progress towards complete recovery. Air. X. Wilson, of Rnngitikei, has purchased it half-brother lo the Aslihurst Guineas' winner, Flimsnup, from Air. A. Cameron, of Wnnganui. Coroniform, by Multiform —Helen Faueit, who won a race at Ashburlnn on Friday lasl, has been placed under tho euro of U. iMurrny-Aynsloy at Kiecarton, to bo prepared for future engagements. Ths Jmrillcr Waipnlii is reported to be coming on nicely at Morris's stables, Hulls, though hitherto lie. lias not shown much promise. While exercising at Riccarton recently, the Australian-bred Cienius met with a flight mishap, ami is at present being treated to a spell. J. Franks was down at Kiecarton from Yaldhurst on Thursday with Sunburnt, Crown Derby, Kautiform, and the Stepniak—Britoninrt filly. Sunburnt and Crown Derby looked particularly well, according to a southern writer. Equitns has, it is understood, been scratched for the Caulfield Cup at tho V.A.T.C. Spring meeting. llerrio Zealand has boon supported for tho 'Parliamentary Handicap at the Wellington Racing Club's Winter meeting. Celerity (Scaton Delnval—Jlonsoon), who won tho Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield in February last, is still in winning form, as she won a six-furlongs raco at Aspendalo Park (Victoria) on Juno 22. Taking a lino through tho Great Northern Hurdles running, Prnphot could not have liarl much chance with Wimmera in tho Winter Hurdles at tho weights. Since tho Great Northern Hurdles, Prophet has won three races, but as ho did not meet Wimmera on any of those occasions, his owner may consider that he should havo been allowed a few pounds from Wiminora for his dofeat at lillorsiie. Advice from Gisborno states that Svcartlimoor is jumping well in schooling efforts over tho steeplechase fences. She is entered for one of the steeplechases at tho Gisborne Winter meeting nest week, and will probably bo taken to Riccarton in August to compete in tho Grand National. In February last she won a race on each day of the. Gisborn* meeting. She is by Monaco, siro of To Aral, and Kaipotipeti. Although Gisborno is not usually the home of many good horses, it will be well represented in the big jumping events this year by Paisano, Continuance, Swarthmoor, Illustrious, and To Arai, tho lastnamed owned in Gisborne and trained at Ellerslie. Hopgarden, who won tho Great Northern Hurdles years ago, was a Gisborno horse, and Alodallius, a Grand National winner, also hailed from Gisborne. There appears to bo an idea prevailing in local sporting circles that the Victorian hurdle horso Ataahua is likely to come over to race at Kiecarton in August if ho receives a suitable, weight, but tho same opinion does not obtain regarding his stable-mate, Bribery, entered for the cross-country events. Regarding Ataahnn's candidatnri. for the V.K.C. Grand National Hurdles, the "Arrow" of Saturday last has tho following:—There is a certain amount of mystery attached to Ataahua's work. As regards gallops, One. can understand a little dodging being indulged in with a horse that is at a long price, but similar tactics in connection with a favourite seems unnecessary. Anyhow, as_ the Grand National will bo Ataahua's first public run over jumps for nearly two yenrs, thoso backers who are taking a short prico about him aro certainly game, if nothing else. Referring to the withdrawal of Fossil from tho V.K.C. Grand National Hurdlo Kace, the owner, Hr. James Scobie, said: "Fossil has not been well since he won the Grand National Hurdle Kace last year. Ho is soroin the hind-quarters, but when I entered him I had hopes of his recovery before the Grand National Hurdle Kace would bo run. Now, finding that I cannot get the lameness from the muscles of his hiiM legs, I scratched him to savo tho public from falling in." Accompanied by "uncle" I'arquhar, Stanley Woottnn enmo over on tho Thursday to ride Viscount do Fontarcc's .Toyiiux Drillo in the big handicap at Longchamp (says tho Paris correspondent of a London paper). AVootton won a good raco by a neck in a big field, and his followers pocketed a good dividend. This success mrlJo them keep Wootton in Paris' until Monday evening, but he did not win another raco out of tho elovon mounts ho had.
