ISLAND BAY DRAINAGE.
DEPUTATION TO" MAYOR-.
The committee of the newly-formed ■ Is* land Bay Ratepayers' Association waited on the Mayor yesterday to urge the necessity for improved drainage on tho flat land of the suburb. Councillor Ilindmnrsh introduced the deputation. Mr., 11. A. Mackny, president of tho association, said that it had been felt for years that ihe main culvert should be completed. On the previous night women and children had been dropped from the cars at Mersey Street and had to struggle through the storm-water as best they could. Many ,of tho houses wero also surrounded by water! He urged that tho completion of the, main culvert should be hastened. Mr. Maswcll referred to the entire absence of drainage on the Clyde Street side of the Parade. Councillor Hindmarsh said that the level of some of the streets was lower than the Parade, and this had a good deal, to do with the trouble. Tho land had been v«r> badly laid out 'in the first instance. "He feared that if the main drain was .completed there would still be Hooding, unless the drain was lowered. The Mayor said thai it would be necessary to continue the main culvert northward, so that a connecting drain could meet it from the corner of Clyde and Mersey Streets, and so that a new drain which' would need to be constructed near Ribble Street might also meet .it. There was an amount of -£1200 on tho estimates for tho extension of the main culvert, and the engineer would carry out the extension at least to Mersey Street without delay. The extension of the main culvert was the first necessity. In reply to a miestion the city engineer (Mr. "\V. H. Morion) stated that tho capacity of the main culvert was at least 20 per cent, more than was demanded of It on Tuesday. In reply to Councillor Hindmarsh Mr. Morton said that the year before Jast £1500 was spent on drainage works at Island Hay, and last year £1400, so that the suburb had done remarkably well. Councillor Hindmarsh said it had. been . agreed by the council that the work should be finished in threo years, and the amount spent in the first year was £3000. This year £4500 should be spent to keep faith with the people of Island Bay. Mr. Morton replied that tho amount of £3000 included special work. It was impossible to spend the sum suggested. More was being spent now on Island Bay than on any other district. Mr. .Morton also stated that people who built on low-lying land at the bay in future would have to raise their sections, so that the rainfall would run off. Otherwise water would lie upon this land in spite of culverts. Councillor Hindmarsh: They should be told that.. Mr. Morton: They have been told it. Councillor Hindmarsh: Then they don't realise it. • Mr. Morton snid he could not slacken the grade of the main drain, which had • very little fall now.
