* THE "DOOMED MAN" STATEMENT-' A POINT BLANK DENIAL. (By TelerraDb.-Fross AasoclatlonJ Auckland, Juno 28. Captain Bosworth, a member of the Knyvott Inquiry Court, gives a-n emphatic denial to Mr. J. A. Block's state jnnnt at Wajiganui last night, that he bad stated that Knyvett was a doomed man before the Court sat. He adds thai he does not know Mr. BLack, and never made the statement attributed to him. MOKE ABOUT THE STATEMENT. COMMITTEE NOT RESPONSIBLE. Wanganui, June 28. Mr. Gorald Peacock, a member of the ; Knyvofct Defence Committee, and one of . the speakers at Monday's meeting at the Opera House, writes to the "Chronicle" as follows, under Tuesday morning's > date:— : "The statement made last night by 1 Mr. Black, relating to Captain Bosworth, has been denied by the latter 1 by telegram this limniing. I (tm very sorry that tho statement was made if 1 not in accordance with fact, and'wish * to say that Mr. Black is not a member of thu Knyvett Defence Commit- • tfo, and that neither Mr. Armstrong (secretary) nor myself had any idea, that Mr. Black was going to make | such a statement. The Defence Committee must repudiate all responsi- ' bility for tho making of the state- ! ment, which was unauthorised m far i as they were concerned. Mr. Black > went to Palmorston by the f»riy traiji this morning, so that I have had no opportunity of obtaining any explanation from him on the mat 5 ter." i ' MEETING AT PALMERSTON. '. Palmorston North, June 28. ) A meeting uf Captpin Knyvetfs syra--3 pathisers was held in the Municipal Hall fc-night, and was presided over by the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash). The speakers were Messrs. Peacocko, Armstrong, and Blaok, of Auoklaaid. J Mr. Steve Hunt moved:—"That, in the 1 opinion of this meeting, it is the duty - of the Government to adopt the legisla- ] Hve means necessary to provide a. new and fair trial for Captain Knyyett, and i to prevent a similar travesty of justicp'in . the case of other persons accused of military crimes." ! ' Sir. Wilson, of Wanganuij supported by Mr. Holien, of Palmerston,. opposed the morion, holding that snch matters should be left to the military tribunals. There were between 50 and CO peopto present, a considerable proportion bejng , ladies. v The motion was carried. Diiring their speecJies, both Mr. Pea* cooke and Mr. Armstrong repudiated, on behalf of tho Knyvett Committee, any responsibility for Mr. Black's statement at Wangunui to the effect that Captain Knyvett was doomed before the though they Eta-ted that they had faith in Mr. Black. Mr. Blaok stated that his authority Has Captain Pullen, of Auckland, wlio had said, in the presence of five people, that Captain Bosworth mado the state- . ment to him. Mr. Black wired during the day to Mr. Lewellyn, proprietor of the Royal Hotel, Auckland, for an endorsement of his efntenient, anil received a ' reply at the meeting that Captain Pul- - len had made the statement, as alleged, in his presence.
