A serious riot took place on June 20 last ~ year between Orangemen and Roman Catholics. It arose through the anc nouncoruent of tho annual procession in - connection with St. Joseph's Roman - Catholic Church jn Grosvcnor Street, but [ the procession was abandoned at tho request of tho police. The Orangornon, however, iiro slated to havo come down in Rri'iit force a long time before the advertised time and stopped at a point in Juvenal Street, out of which Grosvenor Street runs; and in a moment tho whole placo wiis in a tumult. Reinforcements of mounted and foot constables were brought ui) anil charged tho mob with drawn batons. One house was set on fire. Many of tho mob carried swords, files, and other "weapons. Tho entire neighbourhood was in a state of great excitement ) tho whole afternoon and evening, and two' , other charges had to be made by tho [ mounted police to disperse the crowd. A great many arrests wero made, a good ' number ot thpso taken into custody ! being injured. Furthor disturbances i havo occurred from time to time.
