EDUCATION BOARD.
j MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Welling* ton Education Board was hold yesterday, there being present Messrs. R. Lee (chairman), A. H. Vile, W. Allan, J. G. W. Ait ken, W. 11. Field, M.P., A. W. Hogg, .\U\, W. Elder, and J. Kebbell. The statement of finances, after providing for the pay-sheet, showed a debit balance of .CUIS IGs. 9d. The total ituthorisation (including sites, etc., authorised in addition to authorisation up io May 31, 1910) was .£2561 17s. Gd. The receipts for the month amounted to <£7254 lis. 7d. There had been payments since lust meeting of the board of J2383 3s. 7d., which were approved. The chairman explained that the debit balance had been increased owing to heavy payments durK| t the month on completed contracts, etc. _ jhe pay-sheet, amounting to .£B2GO id., was passed. BROOKLYN SCHOOL. A communication was received frotn the Education Department, giving the conditions under which teachers mav reiire oil superannuation. The chairman stated, in answer to Mr. Vile, that tha Department took the initiative in regard to all retirement?. The Education Department notified that the grant foi additions to the Brooklyn School had been increased to enable tho lowest tender for the work to be accepted. On the motion of Mr. Kebbell, seconded by Mr. Vile, it was resolved that the Department be thanked for its increased grant. NIREAHA RESERVE. The Lauds Department requested that the school reserve at Nireaha be set apart for recreation purposes. Mr. Vile pointed out that the reserve was not likely to bs required by the board for school purposes, and, as the settlers had spent a lot of money in improving it, the request fhould bo granted. Mr. - Hogg endorsed the remarks of Mr. Vile, and it was resolved, after some discussion, that if tho .•lands Department will set apart a site at Silverstream for school purposes the board will hand over the Nireaha Reserve for a recreation ground. . GENERAL BUSINESS. A notification was received from tha Government to the effect that Arbor Day would tins year be observed on July 20. The City Corporation sent a formal notice in regard to the drainage at Brooklyn. The Dyerville School Committee wrote in reference to a complaint that "had been lodged concerning the uses to which the school was put io. It was mentioned that Mi. John Marl-in, r* settler of the district, had planted the school grounds with suitable trees, free of cost.—On tho motion of Mr. Vile, a hearty vote of thinks was accorded Mr. Martin, for * his generous gift. « It was agreed that, \vith the approval of the school committee, "the date of the second term holiday at tho Taita school be altered to suit the convenience o4 the head teacher. The clerk of works was instructed to report upon the offer of Mr. Pownall of a residence? al Mangamaire. The chairman reported thai lw had inquired into the conduct of the school committee election at Plimmerton, and found it to have been valid. The chair* mau'ij report was adopted. The special committee F.ct up lo report upon the question of the reduced grants made to school committees was given an additional month in which to prepare the report. GRANTS TO SCHOOLS. The report of tho meeting of th* Works and Finance Committee was read and adopted. The following grants authorised:—Mount Cook Infants, water meter and firing, >£•" v V- Te Aro Infants, water meter box and padlock, ISs.; Levin, ventilation of science room, £1 10s.; Tane, grant for erecting urinal and repairs, c£s; Brooklyn, repairs to register grates, £2; Rongokokako, linoleum to remedy draught and for blackboard .use, .•£5; Mangaono, fencing, fire-screen, repair ot chimney, etc., .£l2; Feat hcrston,. fence repairs, ctc., Clareville, grant towards septic tank, £10; Taueru, repair* in# spouting, overhaul tanks, etc., <£3| Mitchelltown. gas-heater, £4; ■■ Hiitt, gravel, £1 10s.; Terract, repairs to loof, «£1; Te Aro, liniug entrance, etc., .£8 10s. Applications from Levin for a gas installation in tho residence, Wallaceville-for purchase or removal of bath and washhouse, Tokwnaru for repairs to fences, Belvedere for half rent of a horse paddock, and Hamua for use of a reserve were declined. VARIOUS SCHOOL MATTERS. The inspectors wotc askc-d to report upon applications from Levin for gas in the head-master's and science . room, porch extension, and fencing at the Newlaud.-; side school, and for additional accommodation at Reikorangi. The clerk of v;orks was asked to report upon the question of repairs to the flooring at. Kaiwarra, and to visit the Te Aro School amUadvise the board how to properly overcome a difficulty in. regard to tho plaster. The clerk of works was also instructed to interview the chairman of thcGreytown School Committee on tho question of the construction of a septic tank Applications from Carterton for fence alteration, etc., and from Newtown regarding a rubbish receptacle were deferred, pending further information. The secretary was authorised to arrange in regard to the clearing of gors< at-IChandallah, and some plumbing work at Shannon was referred to the committee. It was decided to inform the Mauricevillo Committee that subsidies for libraries are confined to moneys specially raised for or donated to the library. It was resolved to continue the 'payment for the conveyance of children to the school at Poroutawhao. The secretary was asked to prepare proposals for the payment of cookery and woodwork instructors. Tho matter of a scholarship allowance to G. Player ww deferred. TENDERS AND OTHER BUSINESS. The following tenders were accepted:Maranui, additions, W. M'Leau and feons. JC527; Makcvua, additions, L. Arcus ana Son, «£251; Manakau, L. Arcus, .£l7 55.; Waihakekt, tank, C. J. Beard, J:i l.s. Gd.; South Wellington, channeling ano asphalting, A. C. Fry, -dC2O 10s. A report bv the secretary m regard te the school residences in the district was laid on the table. . The inspector's report in regard to I senior board scholarships, etc., was ap- | nroved, and it was resolved to renew application for a grant for a school at Nor* mandate. In answer to a ciuestion by Mr. Aitken, it was stated that, notwithstanding that a school had recently been proride<l at Western Petoiio, tlic Kovoknro School was still overcrowded. • Tho report of the truant officer • showed that the attendance at the schools in the district had been affected by bad weather, and sickness. The b:\ird went into committee, to consider .staffins and appointments, and the appointments made since 1 last meeting were confirmed.
