Sir John L'llermun, who was given a baronetcy in ISIUS, is one of the largest shipowners in Great Britaiu, and was formerly principal proprietor of the Leyland Lino. The Ellennan Lines of steamers com- ' prise the following:— The Ellermau Line, which trades between Liverpool and Portugal, Italy, Sicily, Adriatic, Alexandria, Gibraltar, Malta, Syra, Smyrna, Constantinople, and Odossa, wns founded in 1840, and was conducted by Messrs. John Bibby, sons and Co. under the style of the "Bibby Line," until'thu year IS7O, when it passed inro tlie hands of Messrs. Frederick Leyland and Co., and was thereafter known us the "Leyland Line" until the Leyland Line was acquired by tho Morgan combination, who sold the Mediterranean portion of their business to (now) Sir J. It. Ellermau, Bart., thirn chairman of the Leyland Line, the line in January, . 1902, passing into the ownership of tho Ellenuan Lines, Ltd. i. The City Line, purohased in 1901 from Messrs. Geo-rgo Smith aud Sons, just after that firm had celebrated its jubilee.— Large extensions have been niado in recent years in tho passenger fleet, over £1,1)00,000 bavins been spent in recent years on new steamers.
