The twin-screw steamer Zenlandia coin- '• pleted her trials on Hay 13. when the spoed on a continuous run of nine hours duration was 15.8 knots—considerably in excess of the contract requirements. After the trial she attained a roe/m speed of 16.1 knots on tho measured milo. Sho was at her deep draucht with full load of cargo and coals on board. During tho trials (says the■■"Shinping-World") tlia machinery worked with rreat smoothness, and throughout the vessel at all speeds there was an entire absence of vibration. The own-rtrs wore represented by Mr. J. L. Webb, director of the company; Captiin Free, commodore captain of tho company; Mr. Parker: Mr. Jas. Cook?, superintendent , engineer, who supervised tho construction of the eliin and machinery; and Mr. Wallace, naval architect. OEAEI FROM LONDON . The New . Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Orari, Captain Forsdick, arrived at Auckland from London direct on Friday last (says the "Herald"). She left London on May 10. crossedthe equator on May 21, B rounded the Capj of Good Hope on May 30, and had Cape Maria Van Diomen abeam at midnight on Thursday last. Mod- ' crato weather was experienced until after . passing tho Cape of Good Hope, when very strong southland .south-east winds were encountered between the meridians of lone;. Mdeg. and 80deg. E. Tho wind gradually freshened, and on June 7 and 8 a- fierce . galo was raging, with high seas, which broke on board the steamer in all 'directions. The weather moderated on June ■ 9, and from that date until Juno 17 strong ' west winds and squally and misty weather . prevailed. Crossing the Taeman Sea favourable- conditions were experienced. The Orari has about 4600 tons of general cargo , to discharge at 'Auckland. ' "Fairplay" states that the directors of the Allan Line have asked shipbuilders to tender for the construction of two highspeed passenger steamers of over 20,000 . tons sross each, to be fitted with turbine engines. The vessels are 1o trade between i, Liverpool and the St. Lawrence. Tho 1 Cunard Steamship Company. Limited, . Liverpool, have contracted with Messrs. i. Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Newcastle, for the construction of a sister- :, shin to the s.s. Franronia, of 18,000 tons, - 600 ft. in length, ,and 70ft. in breadth, now a building by them at Wallsend. An unexpected ; difficulty (says tho Wa- , nganui- "Chronicle") has arisen in connecJ_ tion with the wharf at the South Spit. ■ which is- steadily silting up on account of a sandbank forming along one part of tho . mole. This in no way affects tho works; B in fact, is possibly helping them: but tho " largo stone punts aro now practically un- ? and this causes some difficulty in unloading operations. ' r The Government steamer Hinemoa left r nort early yesterday morning, and after . landing stores at Cape Pnlliwr lighthouse ■ left for Capo Campbell, the Brothers, and Jackson's Head. ■ ■ Altogether 152 passengers arc coming to New Zealand by the Union Company's Moeralii, which is due here from Sydney ling saloon and. 56 steerage. On account of ttio bad.weather and rain yestorday, tho dc-iiarturo of tho Blenheim J for Blenheim was postponed until to-night. - Mr. Howard Hnrlcyl.son of Mr. 0. J. Harloy, of kelson, has received an apl pointment as' engineer on the New Zea- - land Shipping Company's new steamer Euahino, and joined his vessel at Wellingi ton yesterday.
