PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FOKTNIGHTLT MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of Petone. Bo> ougli Council, held last.evening, was attended, by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) • and Councillors Short, Harding. Piper, . Young, List, Jones, and Trueman. The council resolved to. follow out the recommendation of tie engineer that £440 should be spqnt on a suitable building,' of concrete, for tbe housing of the pumping machinery. The construction of a wood ■" and corrugated iron building had been previously before tho council. . ■ A circular letter was read from Brace County Council (Otago) asking for'co-. operation in placing certain rating matters before the Government. It was pro- ■ posed, in order to facilitate tlie collection of rates, and minimise the loss,. incon- ■ yenience, and.friction caused under ex- .-• ■ i.stiug conditions, •. that the Government - should make it compulsory upon conveyancers or 'owners, to give written notice to the local authorities of every change". ■ of ownership or occupancy of: rateable property. It was. explained that these changes were not:'usually notified, so that the neces&iry, alterations were not -'. ma"de oil the' roll; The"suggesfe'd amend- '. ment would reduce the amount of clerical work, cost of collection, and obviate much friction and confusion. The..council agreed to co-operate. " :,''■'-■ Mr. William Heppleston, of; Korokoro, complained of damage done to his property '■' by 'storm water , turned off the road. The engineer was instructed;'to ' report on the matter."'. ■ ' ; Mr. P. 6. .1 Reid'wrote, stating..that he', believed himself to have been overcharged for gas supply, owing to irregularity of the meter. ' • . . ■ Messrs. E. W. Hursthouse and Co., Wellington, wrote in regard to tenders ■called for the supply of pumping machin: cry. Tho firm remarked that their tendor, although the lowest,'had not been accepted,'and referred to a report of the proceedings which said that "some of the engines, 'although, lower in price, were, according to, the report of the engi- ' l neer, not of sufficient hdrst-power for the council's purposes." The', letter was. merely received. , Tho Petoue Show Ground Syndicate, Ltd.', wrote asking for payment of inter-., est on tho deposit overdue. The account was passed for payment. The Gear Meat Company replied to a letter in regard' to the blocking of Te ' Pnni Street by trucks that every effort was. being made by the company's employees to reduce the trouble. The Department of Public Health wrote in -regard" to the insanitary condition, of a house in. Jackstou Street, , setting out that repairs were necessary. The De-. partment pointed out that, if the repairs ■ were not promptly carried out the building would have to be pulled down. Th« District Health Officer wrote alsoIhat the occupier of. three low-lying sec- ' ' lions should be ordered to make certain improvements to his holding. The Depart-, inent stated that if the nuisance was flot promptly abated court m-oceedings would' be taken without delay. The Wellington City Council wrote stating that no objection would be offcred y :to the Petone Council making application to.- the .Government: to come .within the city area so far as abattoir -applies were concerned. The . fees chargeable would bo tho same as , thoso paid by the butchers at present ■ haying their stock slaughtered at the abattoir,:— Hanging fee, large cuttle. 25., sheep and lambs 4(1., calves Is:,' pigs Is; '-' 6d.; v slaughtering fee,-large cattle 3s. od., A ' sheep" and lambs 6d., calves lip to 1001b.
