TRAM EXTENSION.
MOUNT VICTORIA SLOPES. ' A deputation representing residents oa tlio slopes of Mount Victoria waited on the Tramways Committee of the City Council yesterday to ask for an extension of the tramway service up Majoribanks Street to Austin Street, and from Majoribanks Street op Hawker Street to its termination opposite St. Gerard's Redemptorist Church. The deputation cor*sieted of Messrs. W. A. JT. Dutch, H, Koid, E. Jolinson, and Xaunder. llr. Dutch said that a large district ivould.be served by the extension. Eesidents of the locality were so convinced the lino would pay that if the council was not prepared to construct tho ex. tension they were quite prepared, with permission of the council, to do so themselves by means of a private syndicate, which would buy the necessary power from tho corporation. Tho deputation presented a petition, signed by one thousand persons resident on the Hawkar Street side of the proposed line, asking for the extension. Mr. Reid pointed out that the line would be capable of future extension from Hawker Street to Boseneath, and if it ran only to the end of Hawker Street, it would be of great benefit to liofenoath residents. It would also afford easier access to tho Convalescent Home. Tho Mayor stated that the council could not consider the suggestion that a syndicate should construct the line, but the question of 3s construction by. the corporation would be considered, and & definite reply would be given later.
