GENERAL FARMING NEWS.
Although the scoring was catalogued to Ik> doiio last Wednesday afternoon, the results in the butter and cheese, judging competition, open to factory managers at the National Dairy Show, have not yet been made knowji. Great, interest is being taken in the event. Kver.v exhibit was judged and scored by three of tho State experts, who worked independently, and their scoring's were averaged. Tho competitors then did their judging. Among l.ho managers who entered were the followin" well-known makers: —W. M. Ross (liallance), J. O'Dea (l'ihama), J. \Y. Swede (Rangitikei), M. T. West (Dalefield), W. if. Henderson (Kongokokako), E. C. Wood (Whakaronga), and J. Murray (Cheltenham). AVhatever the reason, it is very unsatisfactory that there should be so nineli delay. Tho result may be availablo in a day or so. Woodvilie dairy farmers generally aro congratulating themselves upon tho success which has been attained by ihe semi-I'roprietory Cheese Factory, started in tho district about a year ago by Messrs. G. Ji».ev«a is;ul il. V.'iiliiUii». Ai the outset there wore considerable difficulties to be overcomo by the two practical cheese-makers, ajid a largo outlay of money.was required heforo tho factory coiilct he opi:r:it«l. The schema, however,'was well supported by a largo number of dairy fanners, and the healthy competition il provoked resulted in a gain to the Woodvillo dairy farmers in one section alone, of ovei C2OOO. In addition io that tho suppliers of Messrs. Reeves and ,Williams's factory reaped a considerable gain. It is understood that the factory will not pay out less than lljd. per pound on buttcivfat. AH choose which has boon made has been graded first grade. The »esuJfc is> largely duo to the good class of milk supplied, clean pastures, and tho enthusiastic manner in which tho farmers themselves have observed the axiom of "purity and cleanliness." The output for the season just closed is estimated at 150 tons. Next year the factory may put through an additional 50 tons. In most winter show schedules now stipulations appear restricting makers to ono entry iu each of the dairy produce classes. One of the chief things ill favour of this condition is that it expedites the work of judging. Generally a factory manager's manufacture is fairly even, and if he entered several articles it would probably cause much delay through the judge having to go over and over exhibits, endeavouring to separate them when thero was not an appreciable difference.
