♦ RECENT CONTRIBUTIONS. Four New Zealand authors have recently contributed papers to the Bnlletui of the Geographical Society of Philadelphia, one - of the leading geographical periodicals of the day. The first article is by j)r. Bell, of the Geological Survey, who writes on the Physical Features of New Zealand and treats the general geology and surface of the laud, illustrating his remarks with good photographs which arc perfectly reproduced. The writer goes on to deal with the drainage systems, glaciers, lakes, and finally the shoreline. Professor P. Marshall, of Otago University, contributes an article entitled "Commercial Geography of New Zealand" and the trade of' the. country inward and outward. The writer deals with the distribution o) population, land tenure, industries and manufactures, and the future lor commerce. The illustrations give a representation of the shipping in Wellington Harbour, Canterbury wheat fields, the AVaihi mine, and the Hartley nnd Riloy dredge. The above articles" are in tho January number which has for a subtitle, "New Zealand Number; First Part." The second part contains two more Xeiv Zealand papers, one by 11 ■• P. 0. llonjati, of the Geological' Survey, being entitled "Scenery in New Zealand." in which the author acknowledges bis indebtedness to the Tourist Department, Guide Book of ]U0", written by !!r. Cowan. Alpine scenery, bush, the thermal wonderland, mountain scenery, rivers, lakes, and water-falls are all dealt with, and there is a general description of coastal scenery and the fiord districts. Tho iinal article is by Sir. A. Hamilton, of tho museum, who deals with the Maori of New Zealand, and <iives a general .summary of the conditions under which the Maori people existed in the prc-pakcha days. Several illustrations add additional 'in-ts-rest to the paper.
