The slump in wheat, for there has been a fall of about Is. 2d. per bushel recently, will affect the Commonwealth more seriously than it will New Zealand. We have had practically very little wheat to export, and the duality of what was shipped did not inspire the buyers in Mark Lane with confidcnee. .The wheat crop* of 1909 was never previously equalled, but as the outputs of the two previous years was much lower than the normal of recent years there was a comparative shortage at the beginning of the cereal year, consequently, high prices were maintained. In the second half of the cereal year the abundance ha 3 made itself felt, and values have receded. Tho United States Department of Agriculture at Washington has made an estimate of the world's wheat crop for 190y, which places the total at 3,616,109,000 bushels, as against 3,179,285,000 bushels in tho previous year. Tho figures grouped geographically are a-s under:— 1908. 1509. Bushels. Bushels. North America 785,036,000 911.930.0U0 South America 218,834,000 189,672.000 "Europe> 1,678,972,000 1,943,274,000 Asia 384,380,000 430,987,0C0 Africa 60,257,000 66,531,000 Australia 51,806,000 73,712,000 3,179,285,000 3,616,10^.000 According to the Melbourne "Argus," out of the quantity available for export from the ; Commonwealth, estimated at 54,500,000 bushels, about 37,000,000 bushels had alreadily been shipped, and realised over £7,000,000. "Tlio value of the remaining 17£ million bushels out of the Australian exportable surplus has, however, been greatly depreciated, the difference on this quantity being probably at least a million sterling. In addition, there is a depreciation on the blocks held for Australian consumption during the second lioJf of the year, so that the total depreciation of farmers' stocks is considerably over a million." NOTES. The Canadian' Bank of Commerce now has in operation 215 branches/95 of which are in the Western Provinces of Canada, 70 in Ontario and Quebec, 25 in British Columbia and the Yukon, 5 in the United .Slates, and one in Mexico City. Ten years ago the branches of this bank were only 58 in number. Early in May the prospectus of the British "Banana" Margarine Company was •circulated in London. The "Financial Times" was very severe in its criticism of this venture. Tho Hand gold output for April was 619,045 ounces, valued at £2,629,535, and for the four months to the end of April it was 2,403454 ounces, of the' value of £10.207,951. Within twenty minutes of the death of the Sovereign one London buyer of dross goods was in tho Yorkshire train. By eight in the morning he was clearing nut Bradford stocks of black dress goods before the telegrams of his . competitors wjuld arrive. ~ CUSTOMS REVENUE.
