For the past four years the Grey Street Creche has been carrying on a splendid work which has attracted tho attention of Sir John Logan Campbell who has now donated a sum of JEISOO to the Order of the Good Shepherd for the erection of a homo adjoining the ono carried on by the Sisters in charge of tho present creche. ARTISANS' HOMES. A LYTTELTON PROJECT. Christchurch, June 23. A movement is on foot among tho working man in Lyttelton to promoto the State acquisition of 500 acres of land on the sunny slopes of . the south side of the harbour, with a view to subdivision into workers' lots. The land in view was originally surveyed with tire idea that it might be suitable for residential sites for business men having interests in the, town of Lyttelton. \ At an early stage in tho history of the province, however, Christchurch became the centre of business activity. Some workers have been casting -longing eyes at the laud of late, and the project is being taken up with some enthusiasmi PLEADED GUILTY. ; Gore, June 23. A youth \l\ years of age named David Jolly Milne pleaded guilty to charges of forging and uttering a cheque, and was remanded to the Supreme Court. IMPORTANT, PROPERTY SALE. Auckland, June 23. ' Tho property occupied ■by A. Yates and Co., in Queen Street, 33 feet, 'was sold to-day to a 'local syndicate for .£28,500. The value, after deduction for buildings, works out at a little over ,£560 per foot frontage. CATHOLIC CHURCH BURNT. , Hokitika, June 23. A fire at Kanieri at one o'clock this morning destroyed the Catholic Church. Orrlj* a piano and portion of the altar were saved. There was no insurance on the structure, which was an old one. Arrangements had been prenaring for some iiiuo to. erect a new building. i STOLEN KEG OF BEER. Greymouth, June 23. John Black, George Beattie, and Hugh Roily were each sentenced at the Supreme Court to six months' hard labour for theft of a keg of beer from the Greymouth brewery on March 13.
