IMPROVED ACCESS.
WITH EASTERN SUBURBS, CITY ENGINEER TO REPORT. The question of improved access between the city and the Miramar Peninsula was before the City Council yesterday. Councillor Luke moved: That this council recognise that a very considerable portion of the city residential, eomniorcial, and industrial developments will extend to ICilbirnie and adjacent district, together with the no doubt early extending of the city's boundaries to embrace. tho Miramar Poninsula. . That they are of tho opinion that the time has arrived when an im- j proved access connecting the city with the southern portion of ila out- . lying areas should be given effect to—ducJi access to bo of a minimum grade to enable a uioro speedy and humane vehicular traffic and provision for pedestrians. That to givo effect to thiu desire tho City Engineer be instmcted to survey Toute, prej/arh costs and submit same to the council at an early date, together with such other information and details as he and tho council may deem requisite to determine tho question. That the Miramar Borougb Council bo asked to co-opcrato in carrying out the proposal. Councillor Luke said that the comicil was quite cognisant of tho needs of tho district, and he would not speak at length to tho motion. Tho present means of communication wert> unsuitable for vehicular traffic, and would be moro so with the industrial development of the district. Ho did not wish to cast an additional burden on the council's finances this year, but if the engineer decided that any particular locality was suited to the formation of a new means of accesS>, it . should be set apart so that the council would not havo to pay compensation in a few years' time for the removal of buildings. It was important that the grade of the new access should, be as low as possible. The City Engineer should also be asked to report on the advisableness of putting a road through tho Basin Reserve, with a view to improving tho connection with the south end of tho city. Councillor Cohen seconded tho motion. Tho Mayor said ho thought tho time had arrived when the question would havo to bo considered, but an estimate was necessary first so that thoy could have a business-like proposal before them. He supported tho motion. Councillor Carmichael said Councillor Luke should have given the council moro definite information as to the benefits sought. Tho motion was carried.
