0 VICTORIAN ACTIVITY. INTEREST ABOUSED IN ITALY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. London, June 22. Messrs. MTvnnzio (Victorian Minister of Lands) and Mead (Victorian irrigation expert), who are seeking emigrants for the irrigation settlements in Victoria,' are at present in Hoinc. They interviewed the Italian Premier and Poreign Minister, and interested them in their mission. Many references to the objcct of the mission have appeared in the Italian newspapers. Messrs. M'lCenzie aud Mead are going to Milan. They expected to teach London oil July 1. Sir J. W. Taverncr, Victorian AgentGeneral, is at Liverpool, where Victoria is exhibiting at the agricultural show. Prom thero ho goes to Leeds, Sheffield, Stafford, and Preston to arrange for the reception of Messrs. M'lCcnzie and Mead. He is receiving hundreds of letters from possible emigrants. WHAT VICTORIA WANTS. Speaking recently of Victoria's immigration policy, Mr. Watt, the acting-Min-ister for Lands, said:— "I have instructed the Agent-General that reduced fares or assisted passages must bo given only to agriculturists and persons with farming experience, who are seeking farming work. So far as boy immigrants are concerned, I have told him that what' wo require is a limited nurnbee of boys foe farm purposes, but 1. havb emphasised the fact that 'it is essential that all should have had souio agricultural experience and should be approved of by'tho Agent-General or his responsible We want to. discourage tlioso •projects for sending boys from England to Victoria which are undertaken by institutions and persons apart from Governmental agencies. We take this course because wo feel that if immigration is to bo a.success, it must lie proceeded with cautiously, and upon properly-defined lines. Failure, we see, may be caused by the activity of irresponsible persons, actuated by the very best motives, yet doing what we cannot approve of. Wo wish to beware of any such failure."
