LYALL BAY PURCHASE.

AN APPEAL TO MIRAMAR. At the meeting of the Miramar Borough Council last evening the following letter was read from the town clerk of Wellington:— "The "Wellington City Council are negotiating for tho purchase o£ an area of 24 acres of land adjacent to the Lyall Bay -beach from the trustees in tho estate of tho late Mr. 11. D. Crawford, and ask whether your council will be prepared to join in the purchase. The area as a reserro will be of much advantage and importance to the residents of your borough as to tho residents of the city of Wellington, and if purchased it will bo secured as a holiday resort for all time. The price to be paid for the land is about .£3600. It is also proposed that -no rates be charged 011 the area in question. I- may point out that portion of tho land to be acquired' will be for the purpose of a chain-wide road, above high-water marki to the eastern end of the beach."

Subdued whistles and other ejaculations of surprise greeted tho reference in this note to the benefits to be entailed on Miramar.

The Mayor (Sir. J. Brodie) said that before the council could do anything it had to consider tho finances. It was purely a question of finance. He moved that the letter should be considered in committee.

Councillor MTjeod expressed the_ opinion that the purchase, ot this land would stimulate tram traffio 10 Lyall Bay, and would be a very good thing from the city's point of view. It was dccided to consider tho matter' in committee.

It is understood that as the result of this consideration it was decided that a letter should be written to the town cterk expressing sympathy with the object of the' City Council, but that the Miramar Council could not see its way to give financial assistance in tho purchase. .
