She is bound from Montreal to Melbourne, Sydney, and the four principal New Zealand ports. /LOADS IN JAPAN. Mr. A. H. nasell has just chartered the steamer Strathnairn. 4336' tons. Captain M'Glay, to load a cargo of phosphates in Japan 'Juut-Julj loading) for New ?,oaland ports. TONGAEIEO, AT MONTE VIDEO. A cable message to hand advises that the Now Zealand Shipping Company's Tongariro, which left Wellington for London on Juno 1, made the usual call at Monte Video on Monday last. WHAKATANE, LEFT MONTREAL. Advice has been received by the Now Zealand Shipping Company to the effect that tho Whakatane left Montreal on Friday last, June 17,- for Melbourno, Sydney, and Now Zealand ports. She is due at Wellington during tho last week in August. THE KAEAMEA. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's Karamea, which is' due to-morrow at Port Chalmers from London direct, will load 'frozen ■ meat and general cargo at that port oa completion 'of discharge of her inward cargo. She , will afterwards, proceed to Lyttelton to complete discharge, and will then take up Homeward loading at northern ports; sailing finally for London on July 20. . .THE GREYMOUTH. BAE. \ Throughout almost the whole of last week (says our Greymouth correspondent) tho bar has been unworkable. Heavy seas rolling in from the west have rendered it quite impossible for any shipping to take place, hence during the period mentioned the wharf has been lined with steamers and sailers, all loaded and wuitirig a .favourable opportunity torproocecd to' their ■ respective destinations. : Tha now dredgu, which cost almost £40,000, is unsuitable for tho work of removflg the shingle from tho bar, and unless the Harbour Board j rise to the occasion and procure a dredgo suitable for that purpose, the futuro is fraught with grays consequences to the town. !. THE WAINUI'S EXPERIENCES. Advice by yesterday's mail states that tho Union Company's steamer Wainui, 684 .ons, which arrived much overdue at Strahan, Tasmania, on Juno 14, experienced very heavy weather. Leaving Hobart at 5 p.m. on June 7, Port Havcy was passed at 6 o'clock next morning, but the strong gale blowing necessitated a return to that port. On Juno. 9 the barometer showed 28.72, with the gale increasing, and on the following two days it still raged, and it was found necessary to put tho engines slow ahead to ease the cable. On Sunday the barometer commenced to rise, and tho steamer put out to sea. The high seas and head gale again forced Captain Brown to make for port, nnd it was not till Tuesday that the gale commenced to abate. The Wainui put to sea again, iaet the Karitano just south of Cape Sorcll, and entered Macnuarrie Heads at 6.35 p.m.. arriving alongside Strahan wharf at 8.30 p.m. The passengers filled the monotonous ; tune as best they could under the trying circumstances. Hail and sleet fell continuously, with strong winds, from which no complete shelter could be cot, while thunderstorms, with vivid lightning, occurred at intervals. The officers, crew, and passengers all behaved splendidly. The passengers speak in complimentary terms of the attention given to them by the captain and officers. During the first week in Julj\ the Shaw. Savill and Albion Company's Kia Ora will leave London for Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Nelson. To-day the crew of the dredge Paritutu will be paid off, and the vessel will probably go from the stream to the Patent Slip. When she has finished at the slip, sho will come alongside the wharf to complete overhaul. Mr. J. Morrison rejoined the Atua at Auckland on Monday, after holiday leave. Mr. M. I.'. CalTiii, late of tho Mokoia. joined the Atua as purser. Captain K. Livingstone has been appointed master of the Eotoiti in Australian waters. Captain J. P. Brown, of the Wainui. has been granted a month's holiday leave. Mr. B. M. Gillies, chief engineer of the Komnta, has signed off. To fill the vacancy tho second and third engineers have boon promoted a step, and Mr. Daniels has joined as third engineer. Mr. E. F. Chadwiek has joinea the Komata as chief officer, in place of Mr. Flynn. Mr. A. Reed has joined the Komata as third officer. Tile s.s. Wootton is advertised to sail to'.ly at 3 p.m. (c-'rcrmstauccs permitting), for Wanganui-
Very rough weather marked the voyage of the Waihora from Newcastle to Lyttctton, whore she arrived on Monday last. The vessel being heavily laden shipped a good deal of water in the high seas, and on a couple of occasions speed had to bo reduced. ' ' It is understood that the barquentino Pondlo Hill, recently sold to the Sydney Marino Underwriters' Salvage Association, has terminated her period of usefulness aB a. sea-going vessel, the new owners having arrived at a resolution to dismantle and convert her into a hulk for use in Sydney Harbour. The Union Company's steamer Kakanoa. is now at Sydney discharging 1J million feet of white pino and kauri from tai para. She leaves Sydney this week for a return cargo. The Acting-Superintendent of Navigation at Sydney has received a report from tho pilot at Manning Kiver stating that the steamer Eocklily and tho tug John Gollan attempted to tow tho boiler of the wrecked North Coast Company's steamer Minimbah. Tho boiler parted from the wreck easily enough, hut owing to lta dimensions; and its being partially water-borne, it became unmanageable, and eventually sank in 16ft. ot water in the other brcalf. A wire hawser was attached to the boiler, and tho Eocklily attempted to tow it, but the ship winch gave way, and tho boiler had to be abandoned.
