TROUBLE ABOUT A REFEREE.

APPOINTMENT OBJECTED TO. A lively debate arose at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Football Association last evening, over the appointment of the referee for the Welling-ton-Wanganui representative match, to bo played at Wellington • on July 2 next. Following upon tho appointment of Mr. W;- Wood as referee, tho Wellington Referees' Association ■wrote to the committee as follows:— "The Wellington Referees' Association enters a strong protest against the appointment of Mr. W. Wood as .referee in the Welling- ' ton-Wanganui Brown Shield match on the following grounds:—■> "(1) The . Wellington Referees' Association was nut consulted m tho matter of nominating officials for the match; "(2) Had they: been consulted, Mr. Wood's name would not. have been included ,in the nomination . list; for the reason that he has not ■ been considered in any of the appointments sinco he' tendered his verbal resignation at the meeting held on April 19 last, and has not, ■ as a matter of fact, boon considered as an active member of the association since that date." Mr. W. Auld, speaking as a vicepresident of the Reforees' Association, said that Mr. Wood . had verbally resigned from the association. He had not attended, the meetings, nor had ho refereed in any of the senior matches this season. He considered that the appointment was a slur on the Wellington Referees' Association, .which, ho considered, should havo been asked to submit names for selection by tho New Zealand Referees' Association. Mr. Mayer supported the remarks of the previous speaker. . The acting-chairman (Mr. B. .L. Salmon) said that tho position was that the New Zealand Football Association had asked the New Zealand Referees' Association to appoint a The latter body had accordingly nominated Mr.'Wood. Ho agreed that since the match was being played in Wellington, tho local Referees' Association, as a matter of courtesy, should havo been consulted. Ho would say more wero he not in tho chair. Mr. Mackay moved that the committee of the Wellington Fotoball Association decline to accept Mr. Wood as referee. Seconding the motion, Mr. Mayer admitted that Mr. Wood was a capable referee. The point was that there wero other referees in Wellington who were entitled to preference in tho appointment. Tho association should decline to accept the appointment. Tho secretary (Mr. Williams), in reply to a question, said that the secrecy with which the meeting of tho New Zealand Referees' Association had boon convened, had made it impossible for him to submit a list of names. Mr. Oilier moved, as an amendment, that the association offer a very strong protest against tho appointment of Mr; Wood'as referee. The amendment was seconded. The chairman thought that tho motion was rather extreme. It had to bo remembered that tho action of the Now Zealand Reforees' Association was quite in order.

Tho amendment, however, was lost by seven votes to two, and tho motion carried. Mr. Auld moved that the division list bo recorded, but there was no seconder, the chairman observing that there was no need to raise a hornet's nest over tho matter. It was agreed that a copy of tho resolution bo forwarded to the Wanganui Football Association. Consideration was given to tho arrangements in connection with tho visit to AVcllington of the Wanganui representatives, who would arrive by tho Now Plymouth express on tho evening of July 1. It was agreed that on tho evening of their arrival the visitors bo formally welcomed at tho hotel at which thoy wore to stay. On Saturday evening both teams will bo entertained at tho Theatre Royal. A "CURTAIN RAISER." The committee adopted tho suggestion of tho Y.M.C.A. Club (Boys' Department), that the fourth division match, Congregational v. Y.M.C.A. (A team), ordered by the Management Committee to be replayed, be set down for decision a.i a curtain-raiser to the Weliington-Wauganui representative match. The request i of tho Petono Football Club that tholPetone-Toa match be played at Wellington instead of at Porirua was not granted. 'S. Porter .(Y.M.C.A. Club) was granted a transfer from B team to C tea.-r., fifth di/isio.i. , The following, team will represent Wellington in a match against Manawatu, to bo played at Palmerston North on Friday next —Goal.. R. Garneit; backs, D. Hunter, E. Richm >nd; halves, T. M'lnnis, B. Parata, L. C. Mitchell j forwards, W. Ritchie, P. J. Kivell,'W. May, G. Reynolds, S. Rogers. As tho Wellington representatives include a number of tho Wanderers Club 'players, it was agreed to postpone that dub's fixture with St. John's on Saturday next till some future date.
