WELLINGTON LIEDERTAFEL.

. SECOND CONCERT. ' Before a very good attendance of tlhc public, the' Wellington Liedertafel gave tilio first concert of its seventeenth season last evening, in tlio Sydney Street School room. The Liedcrtafcl was unfortunate iai tho loss, through indisposition and other ■circumstances, of-some of its best voices, but, despite this disadvantage, was able to altord its audience the pleasure.of a very good .concert indeed. Of the eight pari songs which, were sung (some of them unaccompanied), the principal numbers were Bylos 13. Foster's splendid "Ode to Music" (for tenor solo and chorus), Dudley Buck's "Buglo Song" (from Tennyson's "Princess"), and Mendelssohn's fine chorus, "Thou Comest Here to the Land" (from Oedipus Colonos"). Though a little thinness was noticeablo in the part singing, duo, inovitably, to the absence of some of the singers already referred to, the music, tastefully and expressively interpreted, fell very pleasingly upon the eair. Mr. Philip Palmer, who took the tenor solo in the "Ode," gave a careful interpretation; of his '_ music. In lighter vein was' the whimsical part song of "An Old. Bat's Talc" (J. F. Bridgo), which caused no little amusement. The other concerted numbers wore Granville Ban-took's cavalier song (from Browning), "Boot and Saddle," the qnartet and chorus "Necken's Polska". (Lindbad), with Messrs. . B. Hoar, J. F. Carr, W. Warren,-and 6. Parsons as the principalis, the tuneful glee, "Come, Let us Join the. Roundelay" (Bcalo). and Schubert's "Gondolier's Serenade." Tlio soloists of the evening were Miss A. Segrief (soprano). Miss Brenda Stock (pianist), and Messrs. ,G. Parsons, W. S. Inman, and B. Hoar. Miss Segrief, who sang "Mclisande in the Wood," and Gounod's "Serenade," created an excellent impression; her voice, though delicate, is sweet, well disciplined, her. singing is expressive, and her enunciation . commendable. Her best effort was "Mclisande in the Wood"; her voice is hardly so well suited to the more passionate sentiment of the "Serenade." Miss Stock, a capable young amateur, selected Chopin's "Ballade in G Minor" as her pianoforte number. This sho played very carefully, though rather slowly, and with a little less animation than Chopin woidd have liked. Mr. W. S. Inman was successful in his rendition of "Tho Windmill" (Nelson),, a song which suited him. Mr. Parsons sang Blumenthal's "The Foe" with his characteristic intelligence of interpretation. His item was a good number, well sling. Mr. B. Hoar selected Laudon Ronald's "0 Lovely Night," a charming number, sung successfully. His voice is a very pleasing one, and his singing would be considerably enhanced were it a little more animated. The Liedertafol was assisted by the Misses Kennedy, Miss Marion M'Kinnoir (violins), and Miss Myra Montague ('cello), who were associated ill two numbers for strings and piano. Mr. Robert Parker was the accompanist. Tho first was a bracket —the three movements from Handel's celebrated "Water Music,", and Ramean's "Gavotto in D." Later, they played a charming number of Coleridge Taylor's —two characteristic walty.es, specially written for strings and pianoforte— which was much admired. Their items wero very correctly and tastefully played. Mr. Robert Parke conducted the* choral numbers, and Mr. Eric Waters played the accompaniments. The fourth ordinary annual general moorine of the Par/area Coalmining Compaiiv, Limited, will he held in the Il'dl of the Chamber of Commerce, Customliouso Q»ay> Wellington, to-day (Wednesday), at 12 o'clock noon.
