Hooves entered a- plea of guilty to a charge of having on or about June 2 at Wellington committed theft of a pair of sleerclinks, valued at 255., the properly of John Taylor. Sub-Inspector Norwood said that accused, who had been living ill the sanio house as tho man Taylor, stole the links out of a 6hirt and pawned them for 2s. Mr. Willis, who appeared for accused, said his client had recently left JI.M.S. Konccr, and had been out of work for two months, lie had been drinking a good deal and admitted the theft when the police interrogated him. lleevos was waiting, to join a ship, and consequently counsel asked that he should bo treated leniently. Accused was convicted and fined 405., in default fourteen days' imprisonment. A well-dressed man named Wm. Henry Johnston pleaded guilty to' the theft of two singlets, a pair ol socks, and threo tics, valued at 10s. 3d., the property of Henry Petersen, and wau convicted and fined 205., and costs »s., in default seven days' imprisonment. A pica of not guilty was entered by Henry .las. Wren to a charge of having at Wellington on June i stolen a suit of clothes, valued at 355. Cd., tho property of Alex. Dimdore. Evidence was given by the police that the clothes wore stolen from outside Dim.doro's draper's shop in Manners Street. Inquiries wero set on 'foot, and it was found that accused bad sold the suit for J!l to a seaman on tho Mararoa. Accused elected not to give evidence. Sub-Inspector Norwood said then) were five previous convictions for theft against accused, and fourteen convictions in all. Ho was at present serving a sentence of imprisonment. His Worship entered a conviction and sentence of three months' imprisonment. An elderly man named James O'Brien pleaded guilty to a charge of indecency, and was convicted and sentenced to threo months' imprisonment. Ada Edwards, alias Christina Stewart, alias Aldred, pleaded guilty to a. charge of insobriety. It was stated by the police that the woman had ten previous convictions against her name, and had only been discharged from gaol on Friday nf tor serving a sentence of three months' imprisonment for vagrancy. His Worship entered up another month's imprisonment. Two first offenders who failed to appenr wero fined 10s., and one was convicted and discharged.
