The. Napier Park Racing Club's meeting takes, place on Wednesday and Thursday.
Owners are given a final reminder that nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting close at 0 o'clock this evening with the secretary, Mr. A. E. Whyte, at tho club's office, Featherston Street.
When tho last mail left England, D. 'Mnher had ridden 30 winners for tho present season, and was at the head of tho list of winning jockeys, W. Saxby being second with 13 wins.
Amongst the acceptors for the Settlers' Handicap at the Napier Park meeting on Wednesday next is tho Torpedo mare Niwaru, Who lias.Ost. lib., and will bo ridden by C. Jenkins. It, will be remembered that this mare made all the running in the seven-furlong hack race won by Idealism at the Hastings meeting, and was only caught when a few chains off the winning post.
The Awapuni trainer, T. Wilson, has no horses in work at tho present time, as the hack hurdle Dnystar gelding Rawhetu has again broken down, and is to bo returned to his ownor, and both Toanga and Waikaraka aro being turned .out for tho winter. It was a pieco of ifl luck when; Rawhetu went wrong, as ho was showing great form over hurdles,' and iu a recent effort nith a light weight on his back he put up a sensational gallop in a school over a milo and a half.
Messrs.' Williams and Kettle, Jjimited, hold a sale of thoroughbred horses at Hastings on Friday last, when the following ■ were disposed of on account of Mr. E. i. Watt:—Yearling eh. f. by Achilles-St. Amy, 31gs., Mr. J. T. Blake; yearling b. f. by Stepniak—lllusion, 33g5., Mr. J. T. Blake; yearling br. f. by Morriwce—Bubbles, 40gs., Mr. J. T. Blake; br. g., 2yrs., by Merriweo —Bubbles, 00gs., Mr. J. Chaat'o; ),. g. Julian, by Merriwee, Sags., Mr. D. Kemp; blk. m. Peaceful, by Mahaki— Vista, 30gs., Mr. Scoons.
The acceptances received by tho Napier Park Club for their winter meeting must be accounted satisfactory. In tho principal steeplechase a good field will go to the post and tho presence of Kiatere, Lo Beau, Nero, and Lingerer should ensure an exciting contest. Tho first-named may not be at his best as he was suffering from a cold at Ellerslie, but I/) Beau, lOst. 121b., is just about at his best. Proof of this will be found by a reference to the running of the Winter Steeples at tho Auckland Racing Club's meeting when with lOst. 71b. on his back ho was winning easly till a faully jump at the last fence caused hiin to fall and robbed him of victory.
As Mr. D. Buiek's horses have been racing for a long time,in a cardinal jacket aud cap, tho change of livery recently decided 11)1011, from these colours to royal blue and gold cap placed spectators at. Hastings at a disadvantage when lwiking to see how Gold Bull pry was faring during the Scurry Handicap in which he started second favourite. He was out in front the whole way. but it was not until tho field was Hearing the winning post that his backers were convinced that it was'the Field Battery gelding that: was leading.
The.hack hurdle liorso Glen, who went wTfuifr during the running of Ihc Second Hurdles lit Hastings, was brought to Wellington _by train on Saturday and will bo shipped homo to Blenheim today.
Outlandor has been accepted for in bolh hurdlo races nt (lie Ashhurtou Racing Club's meeting on Wednesday. I'cu do .Tnio, who went wrong just prior to tho Wnnganui mooting in May, ap-jji-nrsi among tho acceptors for tho Ladies' Bracelet event at tlio Napier Park meeting. With the diminution of tho ranks of hurdlo riders lately, it was only with difficulty that some owners could find riders for their charges at tho Hastings meeting. Any horse that was not known to be ti proficient jumper was passed over by tho few riders who wero not engaged. Hurdle riders of to-day 'take bettor care of themselves than did tho older school of jockeys. FIXTURES. June 22 and 23.—Napier Park R.C. Win/tor. Juno 23 and 24.—Ashburton County R.C. Winter. .Tuly 7 and .S.-Gisborno R.C. Winter. July 16, 20, and 23.—Wellington R.C. Winter. Aug. 9, 11, and 13.—C.J.C. Grand National.
