SHIELD TRIAL MATCH. DRAWN GAME. TEAM CHOSEN FOR SATURDAY. In view of tho shield match against Hawke's Bay n'ext Saturday A and B teams were picked, aud a trial inatch tonic place or. Saturday, resulting in a draw. All other matches wero postponed, including Indies' games. Following aro tho two teams whioli competed:— "A" Team (Wellington representative colours, yellow and black)— Goalkeeper, L. Davies; full-backs, A. Parton and H. Harty; halves, L. Christie, G. Campbell, N. Smylho; forwards, 11. Parton, I). Smith, S. J6noa, G. Davies, and (i. Sinythe. "B" Team (white)-Goalkceper, C. H. Taylor; full-backs, B. Kibblewhitc, F. Ashbolt; halves, G. Aitkeu, P. Burbidge, G. Dawson; forwards, W. J. Organ, K. Murphy, P.. Heere, C. Strack, and G. Strac-lt. Tho ground ( No - 2 Da >'' s Ba i') was Tnry slippery, nevertheless a magnificent game .was witnessed by a few enthusiasts, including tho sole selector, Mr. H. V. Walton, I'iay was spirited throughout, and quiw a. number of exciting passing rushes were indulged in. -• The combination of the "A" team was much superior to tho "B" hide during the first spell, but tho tatter worked bettor towards the end of tho game, and tho last two goals woro rung on in good style. From the initial bully tho "A's" (yellow) led the, way, G. Sniytho and ii. Davies - being prominent. "B's" (white! icturnod the compliment, and' continued to press for about five minutes, thon, from a corner, Becro's shot failed, Harty saving in . good style. Yellows worked systematically, and, after persistent attacks (the most prominent players being N. Sraythe and Claude Campbell for "A's"), R. Partou ■ scored Ihe first goal. "A's" I—o. Becre, Murphy, and Strack Bro.thers got a move on, with two splendid passing runs, Harty proving a solid and reliable defender on both occasions. Whites kept on pressing down tho leftwing, Dawson for "B's" and Robbie Parton, "A's," putting in good work. Alec Parton was later compelled to concede a corner, likewise Christie for the "A" side. Beere tried to score from the corner hit, and failed. However, George Strack managed to secure the ball, and sent, in a hot shot, tho leather passing off. various puds in the scramble, and through the goal-mouth. I—l. Leo. Danes had an opportunity to prove his capabilities as a goal-keeper, and he played Beere's shot woll, it, having been the final to a grand passing run rbetween the last-named and Murphy. Play was fast i and open, Janes losing an opportunity of scoring. Harty and Alec Parton dealt effectively with the Whites' next charge. Organ was working splendidly, and was getting into his usual stride on various occasions. 1 So also did Christie prove in fine trim.- G. Strack and Beere, after a long passing d-uet, centred to Murphy, Organ filially receiving the ball and notching "Bs" second goal. 2—l. This , was the signal for a deparato charge by [Yellows, the savers this time being Dawson and Taylor (goal-keeper). The game so far was slightly in favour of the "A" team, although the score indicates the reverse.. G. Sniytho and G.- Davies frequently got in "some good work. ' Claude Campbell \ras next with a hot shot, this tiaho Ashbolt's leg saved matters, i After a spell of a few minutes, play resumed, and "A's" led the way vigorously. Smith's shot at goal from a very difficult angle bringing no score. Taylor, in goal for "B's," and Ashbolt were conspicuous. 11. -Parton shone out in a glorious run; and neatly centred to G. Davies, who sent the leather'through a. clear opening, high up -and just under the cross-bar, "A's." 2—2. Jones had a difficult screw round, and failed to score out of a scramble right in front of goal. "B's" attacked, Beere's next shot bringing forth no score. Cortsisteiut attacks were withheld by the Yellows, E. Parton's work being magnificent, his saving and centring .something out of "tho, ordinary. This player later tried to score from an awkward .anjjle, the ball going wide. After la,. while,.. Harty warded of an attack by the j Whites with. a long shot. Aitken came up against. N. Sinythe,. and intercepted aj pass well'.' Both teams had by this time settled down to consistent work, and; play was very fast, it being difficult for the fast sprinters to keep their feet. Organ shono out smartly from a roll in down in' his own quarter, and eventually CanipI b9ll centred to R. I'arlon, . thence to Smith, his partner, who scored. "A's," 3—2. Give-and-take play followed for .sojiio time, Strack Bros., R. Pox ton, and Davies putting in good work, Campbell's next shot failing to reach tho desired spot. Murphy . -.ran into Campbell's region, and subsequently the "A's" left y;ing moved solidly down into tho opposing side's : defence. G. Sinythe transferred to R. Parton. when danger appeared, and the latter got in a beautiful goal, tho goalkeeper failing to stop the ball with his hand. I—2. The "A's" wero continually scrumming in "B's" gdal-inouth. Smith subsequently placed R. Parton in possession of the ball, whose neat transfer to G. Smythe finished with the leather passing over tho posts. "B's" rallied asain, and a movement down their left division was ultimately closed with a fine goal being registered by, Geo. Strack. "B's,". 3—l. The two Stracks frequently initiated splendid' runs, a shot by G. Strack bringing no result. Play Was taken up seriously by Ashbolt, R. Parton, G. Sinythe, and Aitken, tho lastnamed appearing too light for Smythe. Tho "A's," per'medium of N. Smythe, Kibblewhite, and G. Sinythe, put iu some really good attacking; so also did Davies and Aitken. The "B's" were assisted with shots by Murphy and Organ, both attempts, however, proving of no use. Young Robbie Parton was continually prominent, and various shots failed to increase tho score, for tho reason of the northern end of tho ground being bad near' the goal-mouth. The 'finishing point of the game was probably the best exhibition of tho second spell. Organ got the bail and ran nearly tho wholo length of tho.field; just as ho. was about to shoot, Harty intercepted quickly, and Murphy promptly assisted Organ, tho former registering tho goal for his partner. -I—4. "A's" were attacking when tho whistle sounded no side. Mr. ■Falconer was referee. THE TEAM. /' After tho game was over, Mr. H. V. Walton selected the following to play against Hawke's Bay next Saturday:— Goalkeeper: C. D. Morpeth (Wellington). Pull-backs: (right),' C. ' Hickson (United); (left), 11. Harty (Wellington). Hatch, of Christchurch, has been chosen to act as referee in tho match. In case C. Hickson cannot play, B. Kibblewhitc will tako his place. In reply to a query, from the Auckland Hockey- Association, the Manawatu Association has replied that its representative team will not bo travelling this year. The namo of Miss Kellaway was mentioned recently as being connected with movement to arrange a representative ladies' hockey match with Wairarapa as a "curtain raiser" to the men's shield match, Hawke's Bay versus Wellington, next Saturday. Tho lady's name should have been Miss M'Kollur, secretary to the Ladies' Hockey Association. AUCKLAND MATCHES. (liy Tclegranli.-Pross Association.) Auckland, June 19.
