NORTHERN UNION GAME.
ENGLISHMEN. WIN BY 27 TO 20. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright. (Bcc June 19, 5 p.m.) Sydney, June 19, About 40,000 persons witnessed the League match yesterday. The game was a vigorous and stirring display. The Englishmen ..won. chiefly through the superiority of their forwards, whose weight told in the scrums, and whose footwork in the open was a long way better than that of-the Australians. The Britishers had the wind against them in the opening spell, hut they kept close on the Australians, and were only a point behind when the whistle sounded. In the next half the visitors asserted their superiority. The backs en both sides performed well, but the English wero riioro mathine-like. Batten and Leythan, on tho wings, played a find game. Messenger, for Australia, was in fine] form, making several brilliant runs. Tho British, combination, however, l oub ) matched tho Australians, but it was a stiffly contested match right throu(h. Prior to the commencement of the game a goal-kicking contest was held • between Lomas and Messenger, the Englishman winning bya goal. Tho' game "concluded: England, fis> points; Australia, 20 points. HARRIERS. ' Under what must bo considered very unfavourable weather conditions, the Wellington Harriers held their annual sealed handicap race for the cup presented by Mr. C. W. Palmer. Miramax was the locality • courso of. about, three miles, over swanips,. paddocks, and roads, all tho elements dear to the harrier. Out of an entry of 26, a field of 18 faced.the starter (Mrs. Bennett, the wife of the club's president)., From the start, Salek at once set out toinako the pace a cracker, and soon had a commanding lead, followed by White* and tho rest of the field bunched (with, tho exception of Keid, who dropped out at tho half-mile). After about a mile had been traversed tho more seasoned runners began-to assert themselves, and at the gasometer the leading division, were Eowberry, Curry, Press, Wilton, and Lamberg. ■ Then canio Salek, Bennettj; and Lamb, with the rest close on their heels. As the final half-milo was entered' the pace was very hot, with Eowberry' • and Gurry still in the front. Press, Wilton; and Lamberg somo forty yards away, and the field well spread out. In the,, run to the post Eowberry easily asserted his superiority, and finished first,. ■ some 9 seconds ahead of Curry (time,/ ISmin. 3sec), and then came Prers 7 seconds later, Lamberg 6 seconds after him, and Wilton, of whom great things were-: expected, was 12 seconds behind Lamberg, while the rest of the field, with one ex- ' ception, all completed the course at irregular intervals. Tho winner, Lamberg, holds the n 'Itncf Cup for one year, and ■ also ree> . a; trophy, whilo Finn, the second man, also receives a trophy, and the captain has also donated a special trophy to Bow. berry for putting up tho_ fastest tune and as an appreciation of the fine effort in completing the courso in the good lime of 18min. Ssee., which; is aj great performance when the heavy iatois of the.course is considered. Tho club afterwards entertainrd theirt lady friends to afternoon tea, anl Mr.; Bennett (the club president) cUrratalated the members on the splendid result of the race. He also urged 'tern onto still better efforts. Mr. W. H. lollockj (a keen enthusiast and life member af theclub) also gave the members some good advice on how to attain stamina and pace in long distance running. The officials for the day were:—Shrter, Mrs. Bennett; judges, Messrs. W- H. Bennett and C. W. Palmer; handicajpers and timekeepers, Messrs. W. H.. Polock and W. Watt; stewards, Messrs. T, E. Bust and H. J. Pollock. Messrs. W. Press and W. H. Bennett carried out the arduous duties of trailing out the course in a manner which gave complete ssras-' faction to all. Next Saturday the Wellington aid Brooklyn Harriers hold a combined run from Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Harriers, with 0, fail muster, ran from Fullford's Kail, Brooklyn, on' Saturday afternoon.: Oa account of the heavy wind, the use of the paper for trail-laying was dispensed with. A. Covenry was told off to (elect a course, and at the same time tc regulate the pace. After leaving Fullftrd'a [{all, tho course led over the hill to Mitchelltown, through Taitvillo into Northland, then along the road tovurds the Karori reservoir, up the old sp'ir to Harrington's farm, and then down the ridge until Ohifo Road was reached. A handicap run-in was held, over the last COO yards, which resulted in a good win for F. Delaney, with E. Shaw and. P. Wilton second and third vespectirely. After tho run. the members were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr. and Mrs. Fnllford at their residence. An eajoyable programme of . music was gone through, several members of the club contributing songs, while Mr. A. Covenry rendered pianoforte solos. Before dispersing, . the captain, P. Wilton, bnefly returned thanks on behalf of the dub, and' three ringing cheers were given for the host and hostess. Next Saturd;y a run will take place from Thondon Baths at 3 p.m. A committee m.*ting will bo held at tho club's headquaEers, Willis Street, on Tuesday evening at 7.45 o'clock.
