AUSTRALIAN PRIMACY.
Tho method adopted in electing a successor to the late Dr. Saumarez Smith as Primate of Australia was referred to by. the- Anglican Bishop of Newcastle in his opening address to Synod recently. The dioceso of Sydney, ho said, in order to be perfectly free to elect the- man of its choice,' agreed to tho plan of leaving the Primacy open to election by the Bishops of tho Genoral Synod from among tho thrco Archbishops of Sydney, Melbourne, and.Brisbane. Tho claims of service and experience carao into conflict with tho claim of convenience of place of meeting. "I worked out the figures of tho journey involved," Bishop Stretcli continued, "and tho result is much in favour of Sydney as against Molbourno or Brisbane, and this probably led to the final decision in favour of Sydney. It would probably bo a far fairer thing if the place of meeting were more neutral ground than any of tho three great cities. Tho present arrangement seems the best possible under the existing circumstances. Somo day perhaps it may bo possible to hold in the federal capital a General Synod which shall bo a true synod, with real powers, ,and not as it is at present a, kind of xhurcli .congress." :
