PALMERSTON NEWS.

PROPOSED NEW PUBLIC LIBRART. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, Juno 19. Tho Mayor has given notice to move at the next meeting of tho Borough' Council that the Library Committee be requested to bring down a schemo for building a new public library in Coleman Place. Apparently the council has got tired of waiting for an answer to an application to Mr. Carnegie for a grant towards a new library. It must be quite eight months since the application was sent, but no word of any sort has been received from Mr. Carnegie. Soino time ago the council took a poll of tho ratepayers for their consent to raise a loan to make alterations and additions to the present building, but there was great diversity of opinion as to the suitability of the present site, and tho loan proposals were- defeated, the majority being in favour of the locality nowproposed by tho Mayor. It is anticipated there will bo no difficulty in carrying a poll for a loan to erect a new building in Coleman Placo where the present fire brigade station is located. The new fire station is now very near completion, and as soon as the brigade takes possession, of its new quarters the Coleman Place site will be available for a library. Two hocked teams from tho Dannevirke High School visited Palmerston on Saturday and played matches with, the local High School girls. The latter won both games, the A team defeating Dannevirke A by sis goals to one. For the winners goals wero shot by Miss Ivy M'Kenzie (four), and Miss Edio Collingwood (two). Palmerston B team beat Dannevirke B by sis to nil, the goals for the winners being secured by Miss R. Kellv (three), Miss E. Piercy (two), and Miss E. Seeker (one). A ladies' team from Bulls played St. Andrew's Club also on tho High School ground, the visitors winning the game by three goals to one. At a special meeting of the Palmerston Brass Band, the conductor (Mr. F. W. Conway), was re-elected for twelve months, the members of the committee at the same time expressing their satisfaction with tho manner in wliich ho had improved the band. . Messrs. F. Nathan, W. Park,-J. Moitnsey, and E. B. Holten were appointed a sub-committee to make arrangements for a concert, and fix dates for programmes to be played in the Square. It was decided to appoint six trustees, in whom will bo vested all the property of the band, including instruments, etc. Mr. J; Jones was cleared & member of tho committee. A lecture on "Mark Twain" was delivered before an excellent audience aft the Municipal Hall last night, by the Rev. H. J. Lewis, in aid of the literary fund of the High School. The lecture proved very interesting. Tho fund will benefit to tho extent of over £5, which, under the circumstances will be extremely welcome, as the whole of the library w.hich had previously been got together was destroj'ed in the late fire. Mr. R. M'Nab is to deliver a lecture hero on July 15, in nid of tha fund which is being Taised to CTect a monument, to Captain Cook. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Horticultural Society was held last night, Mr. H. C. Morpeth being in, the chair. Tho report read by the hon. secretary (Mr. H. L. Young) showed that the society had made substantial progress during the year,, the loss on tho first year's working having been reduced from ,£56 to £3.1. Tho following officers, wera elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr. J. A. Nash; vice-presidents, Messrs. P. A. M'Hardy, A. Strang, J. A. M'Crea,. and J. Goring-Johnston; hon. secretary, Mr. H. L. Young; hon. treasurer, Mr. F.. Mason; committee, Messrs. Bradfield, Day, Harris, Leet, Spackman, Whitehead, Winion, Spoonea, Keeling, Hall, Mesdames L. A. Abraham, H. C. Mellsop, 0. Porritt, G. D. Agricultural Society of England, and it was also decided to hold a rose show about, .the end of November.

Tho Palmerston Lawn Tennis Club ia preparing its courts for next season by a. liberal top-dressing of soil, which will have the effect of improving them. Tha beautifying of the. grounds is also being attended to, and among other things a number of tree ferns are being planted.
