Tho chamber is demanding that the Government shall make a groat endeavour to secure a reduction on behalf of British manufacturers. [A cablegram of April 25 stated that, under the tariff • now being considered by tho Japanese Parliament, "the duties on imported textiles will average from 21 to 3 fold above present rates, and will bo prohibitive in ■ regard to many Lancashire and Yorkshire articles. Mr M'Kinnon Wood, Parliamentary UnderSecretary to tho Foreign Office, stated in the House of Commons, in reply to a question, that the Board of .Trade was consulting tho various Chambers of Commorce." Subsequently it was stated that Mr. Wood's account had caused surprise in Japan, and that the drafters of tho tariff took the utmost care to consider British intercsls in revising the rates. In some cases tho rates are lowor and in no case is there a conspicuous increase.]
