Tlie toast of the evening was proposed by the Dean, who said that Dr. Bonney occupied a unique position, as being both a distinguished clergyman ami a distinguished man of science. It seemed to'him to acknowledge that the Church needed service other than parochial ivorl; He would be tlie very last man to undervalue parochial work, but in a civilised country like England it was necessary that there should be specialists, who,' freed irom the incessant strain of daily work in large parishes, should be able to devote themselves to some extent to the pursuit of science and the various subjects which were brought moro or less into contact with religion.
