TECHNICAL SCHOOL ORCHESTRA. I : AND ELOCUTION COMPETITIONS. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston, Juno 17. ■An orchestra has been formed in connection with the Pahnerston Technical School. Tho director, Mr. 'F. D. Opie, has had the matter in hand for somo time, aiid the .movement was, brought to the development stage at a meeting of members .at tho. school .last, .night. Mr. AVealey AVoolliouse lias beeii appointed conductor, "and • Miss Effio Brown pianist, the latter also being elected secretary and 'treasurer. Mr.; •AVoolliouso "has had .considerable experience in musical matters, and no doubt uiidcr iiis'baton the new orchestra will make rapid progress. For a beginning, only light music will be attempted, but, as tho organisation progresses, more ambitious work will, bo taken ; up. . ' Preliminary 'arrangements in" connection with tho'annual picnic of the Palmerston friendly societies on New Year's Day at Foxton wero commenced at a meeting of tho Friendly Societies' Council last night. Two delegates wero appointed for tho ensuing month to visit any sick members of lodges at tho hospital.' Tho oucliro tournament shield-will be presented to the winning team on tho night of the final round. Tho collectors appointed to make a street canvass for funds in aid of the district lrarso division of St. John's Anibidanco have made final ■ arrangements, and will make' their effort on AVednosday next. A fine .programme- has beeen issued in connection with .tho annual elocutionary ' conipetiitionis . under the auspices of tho Palmerston Technical School. Tim list comprises fifteen items, including recitations (grave and humorous) for lady and gentlemen amateurs, boys and girls, Shakespearian recitations and dialogues, prepared and impromptu speeches, comedietta, and impromptu debate.' The. dates of tho contests have been fixed for September 15 and 16. A horso tied! up to the verandah of Messrs. J. A. Nash and Co.'s premises in Georgo Street became startled at a motor-ear, and, pulling back, hauled the whole verandah down. Tho.animal then stood perfectly still, being less alarmed apparently at tho falling verandah than it was at" tins noise of tho car. , , .. The brass band attached to tho local corps of the Salvation Army, a very fine musical organisation, has arranged to give a number of public perform-' ances in the Square and at tho hospital. This is in return for tho grant of £20 made to their funds by the' Borough Council. Special efforts are to. be mado to raise funds to provide more now instruments, which the band is in need of. A feature of train travelling just now is tho largo number of dairy farmers who are proceeding northwards to Eotonia carrying tourists' monthly season tickets.
