BAYARDO STILL IN FORM. ASCOT GOLD CUP. By TelecT&Dh-Prcss Assoclatio'n-Oopyrieht London, June 16. At the Royal Ascot meotiug, the following was the result of tlio race for THE GOLD CUP, of 500 sovs., with 3500 sovs. added; three-year-olds 7st. 71b., four-year-olds 9st., five aud six-year-olds and aged 9st. 41b.; mares allowed 31b.; two miles and a half. (Sixty, entries.) Mr. Fairio's b. o. Bayardo, by Bay Ronald—Galioia, >4yrs., 9st. ... 1 Mr. M. W. K. Vandorbilt's Seasick, syrs., flst. 41b 2 Mr. J. Lowry's Bachelor's Double, 4yrs., 9st 3 It was recently mentioned in thoso columns that Bayardo won tbo first raco in which he ran in England this season —the Newmarket Biennial Stakes —and tho latest English mail brought news of another success, the race accounted for being the Chester Vaso, of £1596, one .mile and a half. There
were balf-a-dozen runners, and Br.yardo was favourite, next in demand being William, the Third, who ran third in last year's Derby. The Gold Cup victory marks his fourteenth successive win, and during his career ho has only been beaten twice in 23 starts, the events in which he was defeated being tho Two Thousand Guineas and the Derby. His stake winnings are now well over £40,000, hut as his engagemerits this season do not include any. of the "ten-thousand-pounders," it is unlikely that he will ever reach the £57,455 credited Isinglass._ He might do so if he were to continue on the turf- next year, but in England it is not often that really high-class.perform-ers do much racing after the conclusion of their four-year-old season. Bayardo is owned by Mr. Fairie (owner of this year's Derby winner, Leniberg), trained by Alec. Taylor, and ridden by D. Maher. GISBORNE R.C. WEICHTS. (By TeleßraDh-Press • Association.) (By TelecraDh— Press Association.! Ashburton, Juno 17. By reason of tho state of tho track, which the rain rendered dangerous, the Ashburton Trotting Club, which had mado a most auspicious start with its winter meeting yesterday, with record entries and attendances and close finishes, lias been forced to abandon tho second day's racing, and to declare tho meeting closed. NOTES AND COMMENTS. , IBy GiENCOE.j : Jack Pot, who was killed while competing in the Hawko's Bay Steeplechaso on Wednesday, had been a good performer in jumping events. Tho most important races to his credit wero a Hawke's Bay Steeplechase and a Wanganui Steeplechase, but he had won numerous hurdle races. One of his best performances was at KiceartoH on New Zealand Cup day, 190l>, when ho boat a big field in tho hurdle raco, and ran tho 'two miles in 3min. 45-l-ssec, which at that time was something like the record for a two-milo hurdle raco. , Whilo being schooled at Ellerslio durirfg tho week, Explosive fell, and the rider, J. Jones, had his shoulder dislocated. J. Hercock rode the winnors of threo of the four' steeplechases at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting. Prim has recently been taken in hand again at Eiccarton. Tho half-sister to Artillerie is said to bo looking in great heart. In a private letter to a' friend in Auckland, Mr. A. Phillips states that he had Effulgence practically sold for 350 guineas, but the daughter of Menschikoff getting away from her attendant, cut herself about badly, and the . sale was declared off. Murmur, who attained the zenith of his fame on tho turf when ho won the Caulfiold Cup,. 1904, has, in the meantime, been on tho down grade,' and at Goelong last week was handicapped at 71b. above the minimum in tho lower half of a divided handicap, aud oven then could only get a poor third at the finish. The death,of the brood"niaro Chintz is reported from Victoria, the causo being senilo decay. Chintz, who was by First King from Hypatia, by Proto—Martyr, was bred by Mr. John Crozicr, in 1886, and afterwards became tho property of Mr. James Wilson, jiin., tho Bonny Valo studmaster. Her first foal, Shoddy (by Trenton), won, among other races, the V.E.C. Grand National nurdle Eace, 1901. She was also the dam of Avalon, Fabric (Tal tcrsall's Cup, 190 C), Chenille, nnd Divinity. Owners aro reminded that nominations for tho Wellington Racing Club's Winter meeting close on Monday ovening with the secretary, Mr. A. E. Whyte, at thoU'lub's office, Feathorston Street. E. Murtagh, who wont to Sydney to ride Tilson in the steeplechase at the Australian Jockey Club's meeting, returned to Wellington by tlio Maitai on Wednesday last. Ho will probably go to Sydney again next month. Word from Sydney states that tho Soult pony Gloss landed thero in excellent condition, and will be competing at somo of the meetings during the next week or two. Roselike (Multiform —Soult Rose) was to havo been shipped from Auckland to Sydney last Monday by tho Wimmera, hut slio contracted a cold, and lior departure was in consequence postponed for a couplo of weeks. ' Eurus, Northern Star, and Ratepayer were brought south from Hastings by the Napier mail train la6t night, and
shipped to Lyttoltoii by tho Maori. They aro to como north again next month for the ■Wellington Racing Club's meeting. ■ W. Young has been engaged to ride Paisano in tho Grand National Hurdles, for which event, it is said, tho horso will bo specially reserved. Last week at Napier Park Paisano ran six furlongs in lmin. 21sec, jumping three hurdles on tho way. Although ' tho nominations havo not yet closed for tlio Grand National mooting, tho Strowan gelding is already being supported in doubles. The appearance of Oxton in tho role of ' hurdle horse will lend additional interest to the Grand National Hurdles. This fine big horso has proved on moro than one occasion that ho is endowed with plenty of pace, and should therefore prove very useful over hurdles. C. O'Neill originally intended to take Prospector, on to Groenmeadows at the conclusion of the Hawke's Bay meeting, but ho altered his plaus and took tho horse homo to Palmerston yesterday. Prospector's legs were feel-, ing tlio effects of the contact with tho fences at Hastings. Tho Great Northern Hurdles' winner, Wimniera, is at present enjoying a. spell. Ho still shows a ma-rk where hestruck himself at the Wanganui meeting. Even allowing that Auda-x was very distressed after his victory in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, his performance was a remarkably goad one, as ho was still suffering from the effects of a cold. Hydrant will be a competitor at the Napier Pa.rk meeting next week. He has been, galloping well at the Hutt, but has not been schooled to any extent, as he has a decided aversion, to jumping except when the colours aro up. He, however, showed good form in the Century Hurdfcs at Waiiganni, and was goiug along nicely when ho met with some interference. Trainer J. Lowe shipped Effoit, Artidlerie, and Irauui to Sydney by tho Moeraki last evening. The team may be strengthened by a further shipment .later on. Ono reason thai all tho horses completed the course in tho Juno Steeples at Hastings was that a big gap had been made in tho sod wall during tlio running of the Hack. Steeplechase. Tlio sod wall was ono of the most difficult jumps, but in, tho June Steepl&s all tlio candidates mado for tho gap. • Acting on behalf of a WaDganui Sportsman, T. Quinlivan has purchased jrom Mr. G. Pharazyn, of Hawko's Bay, a very fine yearling full-brother to Vi. When tho time cc-mes for handling tho youngster, T. Wilson will take cliargo of him.
