The Ashburton Trotting Club commenced its Winter meeting to-day in fine weathei', -U'tcr the snow, which fell 011 Tuesday, the track was very heavy, aud but poor times were recorded in the majority of the races. There were good fields, however, and the racing was always interesting. The sum of <£21G3 was put through tho totalisator, and six bookmakers were licensed. inside at .£l2 12s. each, and four outside at .£lO 10s. each. Results:— INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP. One ! milo and a half.—Apropos, 20sec„ 1; Hiss Becky, 20sec., 2; Triumph, 20sec., 3. Wallace Junior, Prince Wilkin, ami Sapling were scratched. After a magnificent struggle, Apropos beat Miss Becky by a head. Time, Jmin. 8 l-ssec. WAKANUI HANDICAP. Two miles. —Stella Leigh, 35see., 1; llubican, ISsec., 2; ticllona, 2-tsec., 3. Jolly Tom and Broadleaf were scratched. The winner led throughout, winning by ten lengths. Time, onrin. 51 3-ssec. LONGIJEACn HANDICAP.'
