The new Governor (Lord Islington) will stay at the Wellington > Club until tho vice-regal residence is completed.
The Hon. T. Mackenzie (Minister for Agriculture) has decided to resido permanently in Wellington. It is reported that Mr. G. Laurenson, M.P., is improving in health. Sympathetic reference was made at last night's meeting of the Wellington Boxing Centre in regard to the death of Mr. W. Colt'ey, who had for some years been the secretary. Th<_> chairman (Mr. M'Villey) said that luembsrs deeply deplored the death of Mr. Coffey. They had always respected the late Mr. Coffey, for he was a man who always had tho courage of his opinions. Upon Mr. M'Viliey's motion it was decided to send a letter of condolence to tlie relative of the deceased. Mr. T. Duncan Stout, son of the Chief Justice, who passed a few months ago as M.E.C.S., and L.E.C.P., has now passed as M.B. and B.S. in the London University, with honours in medicine. Ho obtained at his intermediate examination honours in anatomy and physiology. Among tho passengers who left for London by the Corinthic yesterday were Ser-geant-Bugler J. Morgan, and Sergeant J. Clarkson, of the Oiieluinga School Cadets, who at Field-Marchal Lord Roberts's invitation will represent New Zealand at the Empire Cadet Bisley meeting. Ser-geant-Bugler Morgan is the holder of the cadet rille clip of the Dominion. Mr. If. J. H. Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, returned to Wellington yesterday by the Main Trunk train after a holiday in Australia. 'During his absence he travelled over 5000 miles. He went as far north as Eockhampton and Mount Morgan, where he attended the Mining Engineers' Conference.' He also visited the Blue Mountains and tho Jenolaii Caves and studied the coal transport and shipping facilities of Newcastle on the spot. He will report to tlie Government on several subjects which lie looked into. His health lias -been very much improved by tho trip. Mr. T. l{ughes, headmaster of Waltliam School, has (snys a Christchurch Press Association telegram) been appointed Inspector of Schools by the North Canterbury Board in succession to Mr. T. Ritchie, resigned. 'Mr. Hughes takes the position only till the end of nest year, when ho will retiro from tho service. Tho Napier Borough Council last night appointed Mr. John StOrrock, of Invercargill, as borough engineer.—Press Association. Dr. Jfyffo was a passenger for tho south by tho Mararoa last night. Mr. A. S. Biss is a passenger by the Maori, which left Lyttelton for Wellington last night. Mr. Hoy has been appointed to fill tho vacancy caused by tho resignation of Mr. A. J. Geary, late elerk-in-charge, Tramways Department. Mr. Hoy's designation .will bo correspondence clerk.
