:—e London, May 5. Mr. E. W. .Christmas, of New Zealand, has a couple of pictures exhibited at the Royal Academy this year, both of thorn scenes in tho Dominion: "Sunset on tho Great Tasman Glacier," and "Maori Flax Gatherers." ■ Dr. and Mrs. Newell havo come from New Zealand for a year's tour, and are at present staying at Greenwich. Dr. Newell is spending three months of this time in studying tho most recent developments and up-to-date practicc in the london hospitals. Lady Stout is having a busy time in England speaking in support of temperance an<l suffrage societies. She lectures this week at Bournemouth for the Temperance Society and tho Suffrage National Union, and on June 20 for the same societies in Glasgow. Mr. Arthur E. Ware, of Auckland, and Mrs. Ware, aro making a brief stay in this country. Mr. Ware, who has been absent from New Zealand nine and a half years, the last sdx of which havo been spent in tho Argentine, arrived in. London with his wife from Buenos Ayres on April 15. They will leave here again on May 7 for Singapore, travelling vii New York, Canada, . Japan, and China. Amongst the arrivals from Adelaide by the Otranto last week was Mrs. Charles Birks, who has . come -to Europe partly on account of ill-health, an<l partly in order to attend tlie World's Conference, to bs held in Berlin this month in connection with the Y.W.C.A. Mrs. Birks holds the positioA of president of the Y.W.C.A. in Adelaide, and for several years past has done much to promote the work of that institution. She is tho mother of Mr.' Laivrence Birks, of Rotorua. Three New Zealand footballers took part in tho final for the Northern League championship between Oldham and Wiyan. For Oldham tho veteran G. W. Snlith, of the "All Blacks," was playing wing three-quarter, and on the opposing 6ide were Seeling, another "All Black," in the forwards, and Launcelott Todd, at centre three-quarter. AU three wero prominent in the game, which was worn by Oldham by 13 points to 7. A. C. Palmer, the brilliant O'ta.go threequarter in the London Hospital Rugby team, who has also played for England,is a member of tho English tetun which left London on Friday for a tour in the Argentine. The team is under tlio management of R. V. Stanley, of Oxford University, and is made up chiefly of players fro,m t.he United Services, the Old Merchant Taylors, and the hospitals. J. E. Raphael, the ex-international, is to play full-back. Lord Islington (formerly Sir J. DicksonPoynder). tho newly-elected Governor of Now Zealand, was on Thursday the guest of tho West India Club at a dinner at t.he Howard Hotel, Norfolk Street. Sir Daniel Morris presided, and among others present were Mr. R. H. M'Carthy, Mr. W. Hall-Jones, High Commissioner for New Zealand; tho Colombian Minister, Sir Robert Llewelyn, Sir Owen Philipps, M.P., Sir Charles Lucas, and the Charge d'AffaiTes for Bolivia. Miss A. and Miss M. Van Staveren, of Wellington, aro taking a short holiday from studying music in Berlin, and are spending a month in Loadon visiting relatives. Mr. Jas. Amess, of Christchurch, has como to this country oil a business trip, and after spending a short time in London goes to France on business, later, visiting relatives in Edinburgh mid Ireland. ' Miss Nellie and E. F, Watts, of Christchurch, who arrived in London by the Suevic, intend visiting Paris and Berlin, Devon, Guernsey, and Sootland, and return to New Zealand about September. Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Nathan, of Auckland, and their four daughters arrived in London by the Mongolia, and are staying for the season at Bailey's Hotel. .Their trip will probably extend over eighteen months. . 8
