NATIVE INTERPRETERS

THE NEW REGULATIONS. The now regulations concerning the licenses as interpreters under tho Native Land Act of last session are contained in a supplementary Gazette. Tlioy Include tho' following provisions:— Every application to be registered as an interpreter shall bo accompanied by a certificate signed by a judge, commissioner, or registrar of tho Native Land Court, or by a Stipendiary Magistrate, a Justice of the Peace, or on officiating minister under the Marriage Act, 1908. Every such certificate shall state that the applicant is of good character, and is, in the opinion of. tho person signing that certificate, a snitalilu person to hold a licenso as a Nntivo interpreter. Every application for n licenso to act as an interpreter of tho first grade shall be accompanied by a feo of .£2 -s.; and every application for a licenso to act as an interpreter of tho second grade shall bo acco'mpanicd by a fee of JJI Is. For the purpose of tho examination of applicants ,for licenses there is hereby constituted a Board of Examiners, which shall consist of tho person for the time being holding office as tho UnderSecretary of the Nativo Department, together with three other persons appointed for tlio'purpose by tho Native Minister. Tho board shall meet for (lie consideration of applications on tho last Mondayof tho months of February, June, and Octobor in l each year. Every applicant for a licenso of tho first grade shall bo required by tho board : to pass to its satisfaction an examination in tho following subjects;—(a) English grammar; (b) translation at sight of passages, from into _ Maori, and from Maori into Un«lish; (c) translation of deeds; and (d) the writing of an essay or letter in Maori, with a rendering of tho same in English. Every applicant for a licenso of tho second grade shall bo required to pass to the satisfaction of the boaTd .an examination consisting of simple questions of English grammar, and the translation at sight of easy passages from English into Maori and from Maori into English. If in any examination for a licenso of the first grade any candidate fails to satisfy tho requirements of the board ill respect of such a license, but the board is satisfied that in that examination the candidate has shown sufficient knowledge to satisfy tho requirements of the board in respect of a. license of the second grade, tho board may, if it thinks fit, recommeild the issue of a license of the, second grade to that candidate. No sueh liccnse shall be granted until tli* payment of a further fee of .55 3s, la the case of a' license of the first ijradi, ami of .£1 Is. in the case of a license of the lecond ffrado.
