AND THE GERMAN PROTESTANTS. REPLY TO PROTEST. By Te!eer«Dh-Pren Aeeociation-ooD7rliht Berlin, June 14. With regard to Germany's protest against the Pope's recent Encyclical on the tercentenary of Cardinal Borroraeo (which Encyclical has caused some indignation on tho part of Gorman Protestants), Renter's Agency states that the Vatican's reply expresses regret a-t the unexpected effect of the Encyclical, aud undertakes that German bishops shall not publish the text of it. Tho King of Saxony, who is a. Catholic, has expressed to Protestant members of the Government regret that his efforts to protect religious peace hare been thwarted by such sharp attacks on 'the Lutheran Church as those made in the Encyclical. He intends to write to the Pope on the subject. [Tho "Osservatore Romano" (the' Vatican organ) has stated that tho Encyclical was aimed at the Modernists, and dealt chiefly with Roman Catholics who in Cardinal Borromeo's time were rebelling against tho teaching authority of the Holy See.] VATICAN PROTESTS TO MADRID. NON-CATHOLIC MISSIONS. Rome, June It. The Vatican has protested against the Royal Order in Madrid authorising the use of.outward symbols by non-Catholic church missions. [A cablegram published on Monday stated:—"A Royal decree authorises nonCatholic church missions to show external signs of their belief on the walls of their churches."]
