A Musical Evening. • last night the Misses Cooper, gave a ffrery enjoyable evening at their home on the Terrace, when their friends were cnitertained with much delightful music. Obituary.' The death occurred at Auckland on -Friday-of Mrs. Isabella . Cochrane, relict of.the late Mr. Wm. Cochrane,' of Reefton. The deceased was one of. the oldest West Coast identities, her husband being a well-known timber merchant and later a hotelkecper, and she had resided for fifty years there, having lived in all sixty years in New Zealand. An Auckland Incident. A rather extraordinary incident is, reported to have happened in Queen Street on Wednesday 'evening last, (says the Auckland "Star"). , Mrs. P. H. Ellis, a resident of Grey Lynn, had been out visiting some friends, and arrived at the lower end of Queen Street too late to catch , the last car for Grey Lynn. She thereupon engaged a cab,and was about to start when a man standing near by hailed the driver, and asked uini was he going, to drive -off with tho nosebags on his horses. The driver got off the box, and proceeded towards the horses' heads. At the same moment the man is said to have jumped on to the step of the vehicle, and made a grab at Mrs. Ellis's gold muff chain and watch, and also' at a purse she held. The lady struggled to retain her property, and the driver, coming to her assistance, the thief decamped with , only .a piece of the chain in his hands. The. driver, and a policeman gave chase along Customs Street, but the man succeeded in giving his pursuers the slip, thus evading arrest. Miss Craig, from Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. Dawson. Miss Mary Hall is going ap to the Wairarapa shortly to visit friends there. Miss Shayle-George, of Auckland, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Curtis.
