4 Referring to the refusal of the Minister for Railways to allow the Alanawatn County Council to extend the Sandon tramway to Greatford, r tho "Star" says: "The argument of the Minister for Railways that it is not wise' for the Government to agree to the extension, as it would bring tho lino into competition with tho Government lino, will not hold water so far as the main body of tho traffic on tbe tramway is. concerned, although even if it did it seems a retrograde policy for tbe Government to deny to settlers the right to provide for themselves the host means of getting their produce to 'market and of getting their supplies so long as the general community are not asked to pay for it.''
