BURGLARIES.
HOUSE ENTERED IN DAYLICHT. Further particulars regarding the daring daylight burglary perpetrated on Wednesday' afternoon last at "Marinoto," Dr. W. H. Parkes's residence in Symonds Street, when tlie house was entered in the afternoon and jewellery valued'at £600 carried off, sJiow that at tho time of the burglary Dr. Parkcs was away from home, attending to his professional duties, and Mrs. Parkcs, who is secretary of. tho Society for tho Health of Women and Children, was busy preparing a typed report for tiro annual meeting of tho society. At 3.30 Mrs. Parkcs went into tho nursery, and everything was then in order in that room. She then went to her sittingroom, which adjoined tho nursery, and was busy there until o o'clock. At that hour one of the nursemaids, who had just returned after an outing with, th' 3 children, noticed that the nursery had bean disarranged, a cursory glance being sufficient to indicate the recent preseaice- of a stranger. She immediately informed Mrs. Parkes of the fact, and an examination showed that the room had been ransacked. The children's money-boxes had been emptijd, and several articles of jewellery belonging to the nursery-governess taken from a casket on the dressing-table. Mrs. Paj-kes's bedroom was then examined, and here it was found that the burglar had made an overhaul of almost everything. The room was in a state of disorder, and drawers and doors had been forced open. From a large chest, several drawers had been prized, and two jewel cases extracted. Several cabinets and a dressing-table were overhauled in the search for booty, and a largo wardrobe was opened by bursting the lock. Another wardrobe built into the wall was overlooked, and a cash-box containing £40 was thus missed. In a dressingtable drawer a diamond pendant and a couplo of ear-riu£s were also overlooked. Otherwise, however, tho search was very thorough, and amongst the articles stolon were two valuable diamond rings, each valued at £150, two other rings, valued at £30 and £20 each, a valuable pearl pendant, a number of brooches, two gold watches, and a gold watch' recently given to Dr. Parkcs by a patient, it is surmised that the burglar watched the departure of Dr. Parkcs from the house, and then coolly entered by the front door. A view of the hall could be obtained through the letter, slot in the door, and as very heavy carpets cover the stairway and passages tho entrance would bo noiselessly effected. The sit-ting-room is at the top of the stairs, the nursery adjoins, and Mrs. Parkes's bedroom is a few doors further round the passage. Tho burglar must have heard the click of the typewriter in the sitting-room throughout operations. It is surmised that tho overlooked pendant and ear-rings, as well as the finding of a woman's cotton glove in tho bedroom (evidently used for the purpose of counteracting finger-print evidence) go to show that the daring visitor was possibly disturbed, and forced to -make a hurried departure. Tho police have the matter in hand.
