RAILWAYS AND COAL. (By Telegraph.—Speolal Correspondent.) Wanganul, Juno 11. Speaking of the coal-carrying business done by the railways, Mr. Millar, Minister for Railways, stated yesterday that they were carrying something like 20,000 tons monthly from Taupiri alone. Tho business will be greatly increased in the North Island shortly, as new mines will soon be opened at Ngaruawahia and in tho Waimarino. When tho latter mine is opened, the coal, it is predicted, will bo obtainable in Wanganui at 10s. to lis. per ton.

The annual collection of the District Nursing League proceeded tcxlay with satisfactory results, the public liberally responding to tho appeals of lady collectors at street corners. The first six hours' collecting realised £140, and when all returns come in it is expected that at least £300 will he realised.

The local Labour party, with a view to infusing life into the movement, intend proceeding with the acquisition of a hall of their own, and an energetic canvass will be made to secure as many . women members to the party as possible. /

Messrs. A. J. T. Hogan and R. W. Smith, M.P.'s, intend making another trip into the back-blocks next week. This time the districts lying westward of Wanganui River will bo visited.

The south mole at Castle'cliff has now been pushed out- 2000 ft. Mr. Leslie Reynolds, consulting engineer ,to the Harbour Board, advises against pushing it out to sea a greater distance than the. north' mole (which will be lengthened shortly) on account of such proceeding being likely 'to cause adverso conditions of sea and current. Mr. Reynolds, reporting on the progress of tlie harbour works, says they havo been well carried out, and are giving good, results, but ho advises the resumption of dredging on as big a scale as possible to still further' advance the existing improvement.
